DVL-Digest 1738 - Postings: Index 24P Strobing or Not, was "review of the SDX900" 24P Strobing or Not, was "review of the SDX900" - "Crittenden, Jan" Barry, I have been wanting to respond to this thread, because I see footage all the time that does not strobe and I think that if people see strobing in their footage, they have done something wrong. You have actually summed up everything that I had to say. Well done. Especially the part that says the DVX/SDX shooter can tell immediately by hooking up a monitor. Great advice. One final note, in the ASC manual there is a chart that references the panning speed vs. frame rate vs. focal length. As an example of this, using a 50mm lens at 24 frames capture, it should take the shooter 50 seconds to make a 90 degree arc. This is no subject in the foreground, this is wide panoramas like in Dances with Wolves. That should give everyone a clue as to how slowly one should move the camera for a wide scenic shot. And then as Barry cleverly pointed out, you can always check it. Some folks think that the strobing is due to the pulldown. I point out to them "do you see the strobiness when you rent a film from BlockBuster?" If it is in the video pulldown, extracting the 24P won't make it any better.
