19x lenses (was: JVC or DVCPRO - "Perry"

Just for the record, about 15 years ago I was a Camera Product Manager for
Sony Broadcast. I was on a visit around the Canon broadcast lens factory in
Kawasaki. They asked me what I would consider the perfect lens for a
portable 2/3 in camera, and I told them 10x5mm. They all laughed and said
'very difficult!'.
Well they're not laughing any more and I still think it's about spot on. If
you need it any longer you can put a x2 on the back, although these days it
is fashionable to use this for a 4:3/16:9 switch.
If you were to translate these numbers for a half inch camera it would need
to be about 10x3.5mm.

PD150 DOES HAVE A HISS ISSUE. - "Perry"

Maybe this puts it in context:
I tested it with my Sony MS5 stereo mic (cardioid) in my rural UK location,
and the birds and distant traffic completely drowned out the hiss! I wasn't
able to measure it, but I would estimate a signal/noise around 60-70dB with
this microphone on normal voice level. That is about the same as a good
quality FM broadcast. The noise was inaudible on AGC, which from what we've
heard is more of a fixed gain with overload protection.
I'd want to do some more tests with a mixer feeding the camera, but I would
say that it wouldn't stop me buying one tomorrow.

UHF or VHF - "Perry"

>I'll let someone else address the issue of choice for wireless mikes.
All I know is that I like UHF better, mainly because of less frequency
congestion.<
Since it is the week-end I'll tell you a story! Many years ago I used to do
location drama with the BBC. They inherited some frequencies from old Band
I television (405 lines) which they used for radio talkback. So basically
the production talkback was broadcast on about 45MHz all over the location.
We discovered that the transmitters put out very significant amounts of 2nd
harmonic which put it slap bang in the middle of VHF FM broadcasting! It
meant that us engineers could stay down the pub whilst we monitored on the
car radio a typical obscene screaming match and waited for a slight chance
of us being needed back on site! Ah happy days!
The bottom line - make sure you don't have a taxi or police car interfering
with your mic frequency. I must admit I've been lucky, the only time I had
a problem was in a harbour (presumably from the coastguard) and near an
airport due to the radar scanners.
