DVL-Digest 546 - Postings: Index Apple DV codec D9 - (2) Documetary Film and Video Prod G4 info Top 10 Lists, Newsgroups, and Apple DV codec - Adam Wilt > I've been having problems rendering to the DV codec in After Effects, > Premiere and other programs that's not FCP. These are animated titles, > logos, etc. The quality is really bad... The Apple DV codec, not to put too fine a point on it, applies a reduced pressure with respect to atmospheric. The newest release lets FCP work in YUV space and avoid the YUV-RGB conversion issues, but its compression is still decidedly suboptimal. The best fix at present is the DV Plus codec in the ProMax DV Toolkit ( or thereabouts), which renders noticeably cleaner pix, especially on sharp-edged and highly saturated synthetic images. Unfortunately you'll get a lateral chroma shift using DV Plus; it's a tradeoff. Bear in mind also that all DV codecs are lossy and that synthetic graphics are the worst stressors. The QT team are painfully aware of the problems and are working on improvements, I am told, but Apple does not comment on and sure as heck doesn't promise release dates for unannounced products. You can compare the Apple codec (the prior version, at least) and the DV Plus codec when handling synthetic images at http://www.adamwilt.com/pix-stress.html and at http://www.adamwilt.com/pix-codecs.html. D9 - Adam Wilt nospam-adamwilt@flash.net > Any feedback on the quality of Digital S as opposed to DVC pro format? It rocks. D-9 is the "stealth format" that nobody seems to know about, yet it delivers nearly Digital Betacam pictures at DVCAM/DVCPRO(D-7) prices. It's the same image quality as DVCPRO50, at a lower price. The downsides are that you're still working with VHS-sized tapes (how 20th century!), and that, being a JVC product, it automatically doesn't get any respect, regardless of how well it works! It's also a one-vendor format, unlike DVCPRO50 (which is second-sourced by Hitachi, Ikegami, and Philips), and it's not yet widely adopted (DVCPRO50 is also none too common yet), so tape interchange with clients and dub houses can be tricky. Also bear in mind that DVCPRO50 VTRs play back DVCAM and DVCPRO tapes if you need to incorporate footage from those formats, while D-9 VTRs (and only certain models of them) can only play back VHS and SHVS in addition to D-9. If you don't mind being a 1/2" D-9 island in the ocean of 1/4" tape formats, and you're unfazed by the single source (JVC is unlikely to dry up and blow away any time soon), D-9 makes a lot of sense. > Our technical needs are 1) smpte time code generation and reading, Yup. > 2) 4:2:2 video Got it. > 3) budget (of course) D-9 has the best price/performance ratio in the market. > but as far as picture quality and bluescreen work, is there a format > preference? D-9 and DVCPRO50 are identical in this respect (though the different cameras available will make a difference). Digital Betacam is slightly better, but a lot more expensive. I mentioned earlier on D7 in the same breath as D9, when of course I was thinking of DVCPRO50 which currently doesn't have a D number. Comes with the territory when you do stooopid things like posting at dawn cos the birds woke me up and I couldn't get back to sleep! There's one spare connector on the IDE cable, so adding one drive doesn't require the TurboMax. > Also, since G4s don't have CD rom drives how do you get music from CDs > into The G4? Can the DVD drive play CDs? Yes, just use it like a CD player.
