Audio on a Cessna plane - Adam Wilt

I'd like to get the headset audio output to the mic input of a Sony TRV900,

Most airport shops (well, the good ones) will sell headset Y cables, and many
now have headset-to-camcorder adapter cables already wired for this
application.
The last couple of times I did this, I used a headset Y cable to split off the
feed, and a line-to-mic attenuating cable. It worked fine. A passive mixer
will work as long as it similarly knocks line level down to mic level
(actually the headset level is a bit higher, but it's in the same ballpark as
line level, so the line-to-mic attenuator was all I needed).
Bear in mind you'll get a very "dry" track with no ambient sound. Something
many people do (but I haven't tried yet) is to put a small lavalier mic inside
one earcup of the headset. That way you'll get the radio traffic, but also
enough ambient audio filtering into the headset to make the video feel right.
If your victim in this experiment uses an ANR headset, have him/her switch off
the noise cancellation for the duration of the taping.
Alternatively, if you have a spare headset, drop the lav in it and rubber-band
the two earcups together, more or less tightly to exclude more or less
ambience.

Adam Wilt

Canopus Raptor or Pinacle Stud - Adam Wilt

110% backing that. Pinnacle is worthless.
Especially with the stock down to and change (from a high in the +
range) due to an underperforming quarter and the rash of investor lawsuits
subsequently filed! :-) Oh, how the mighty are fallen...

Digital Orgin DV Codec questio - Adam Wilt

Hmm, it certainly made a difference on my EditDV/Win system.

If you *know* that the analog output from your DV device is properly
calibrated, *and* that the proc amp is properly calibrated, *and* you know
exactly what levels trigger the meter responses you saw, then you can trust
it. But I never trust a bit of gear until I measure it on a calibrated 'scope,
which I why I suggested pulling the proc ampo out of circuit, and tweaking the
monitor to guarantee you'll see any changes occurring in the picture.

DV capture question - Adam Wilt

However according to DVCentral.org's site, "DV data, not video, is
> transferred electronically via the firewire to the computer's hard disk.
> This not a capture process. it's a file copy process....
> My question is: Am I doing this DV "capture" right?
Yes, you're doing it right. Technically, it's not a capture but a file
transfer; operationally, you're capturing the data from the tape to the disk,
so don't worry about the technical nit-picking!

Adam Wilt

GL1 short questions - Adam Wilt

For a realistic assessment of the exposure of the image, is the viewfinder
> reliable?
More reliable than the flip-out screen, since the eyepiece restricts the angle
at which you view the LCD therein. With careful note-taking and practice it's
a pretty good indicator, but always use zebra to be on the safe side.

Try adding a Beacktek or Studio1Productions passive mixer to cut down the
level. You might also try a different mic.

Adam Wilt
