24fps dvd clips to canopus 29. - Adam Wilt

Wow ! I did'nt know that....I should go back to DVD school :>

This was another thing about Digital Film Group that bugged me.

Because if you're aiming for a 1.85:1 35mm release, you'll wind up cropping
off the top & bottom of the 4:3 image anyway (you'll even crop a bit from a
16:9 image). If you're going for 1.33:1, it's a different story... Blair
Witch, anyone?

Never having done any real resolution tests with the Xl1, I had never

Saturation isn't really affected; chroma data are line-doubled as best I can
tell (thus you wind up with 4:1:0 chroma, and it still looks pretty good, so
there!). I have noticed a very slight shift in color rendering, but I haven't
tracked this down precisely.

I do talk funny, it's true, but in this case "judder" refers to the
predictable, periodic syncopation of temporal data as in the inverse 3:2
pulldown of NTSC tape to film, whereas I usually think of "jitter" as a random
fluctuation in the timing of what should be isochronous data.

Mac Audio Extension Problem - Adam Wilt

During playback, my audio went out and I get a high pitch hiss.

Have you zapped P-RAM? Amazing how this will fix things sonetimes.
If that doesn't work, you could hunk and peck for hours trying to fix this...
what I'd do would be a reinstall of whichever version of MacOS you're running,
a fresh QT install, and a fresh FCP install. It's a brute-force approach but
the Mac makes it fairly painless and I've done it so many times now without a
problem (and this coming from a Windows background where OS reinstalls are A
Big Deal) that I'd try this without further ado.

PIII, AMD, Celeron ??? - Adam Wilt

I'm looking into a portable editing solution and need to stick with

> Win2000...really...
Well, you *could* get the PowerBook and FCP, no worries, and add DAVE 2.5.1
for transparent networking to and file interchange with Windows machines...
Or, have a look at FAST purple., a turnkey laptop DV NLE running on a VAIO
and/or a Gateway (I saw both at IBC). Check out EditDV running with OHCI 1394
drivers. Even Avid has announced Newcutter DV and XpressDV versions, probably
to be supplied as turnkey systems running on Thinkpads.
Pick the software first. Then figure out what hardware that software is
compatible with, and buy that hardware.
It may be a bit early to look at FireWire drives for the video drive, as
performance is compromised by the 1394/IDE bridge and by
not-necessarily-ready-for-prime-time 1394 bus sharing between the DV device
and NLE and the disk driver.
One advantage of the Mac is how-swappable device bay IDE drives from VST, MCE,
and the like. I'm not sure what other good options there are on the PC, other
than getting a big, fast internal drive and partitioning it into two bits.

Software for DV-in and DV-out - Adam Wilt

Can anyone point me to some freeware/shareware programs which can be used for DV-in/out...

video switchers - Adam Wilt

I've got a multi-cam shoot coming up and I'd like to use all XL1s. Problem
> is, if we want to switch live to a master tape, will we need a special
> switcher that has frame buffers built-in?
Yes.
> What switchers are capable of switching cameras that don't genlock? Any?
The Videonics line has been mentioned. They're fine if you stick to programmed
transitions using the take button; don't use the T-handle as the processor
can't keep up and the transitions get stuttery. If you're used to traditional
SEGs with big control panels and button-per-function design, be sure to spend
enough time with the Videonics before the show to get used to its very
different user interface -- it's perfectly functional, but it does "think
different."
The MXProDV even lets you connect the XL1 using 1394 -- try the Videonics
DistanceDV cables, which will run 50 meters (at S100 speeds) without repeaters
or extenders. Cool stuff!
Panasonic makes two SEGs, the WJ-MX30 and the WJ-MX50A. I use an older MX50
with Bob Rall's resolution improvements and proc amp controls for all my live
work. The Pannys are more "traditional" in button layout and function, and the
T-handle can be used live for silky-smooth manual transitions.
Cheers,
Adam Wilt
