Climate
VX1000 Photo Shot

Climate - "Perry"

It is obviously no coincidence that countries have developed faster with
more attractive climates, just as Las Vegas is the fastest growing US city.
(Not sure there would be too many folk claiming LV as the most civilised,
except of course during NAB!).
What cannot be denied is the corrosive power of the tropics. Dry desert
heat doesn't seem much of a problem, most electronics work fine at 50deg C,
so provided the device has adequate cooling it'll be fine. Heat AND
humidity is a machine killer. Many years ago my company suffered extensive
semiconductor failures on machines sold to Nigeria, we sent samples off to
the manufacturer (National) and they came back and said the devices showed
similar faults to those found in their Climate Acceleration chamber, which
they had been assured was ten times worse than anywhere on Earth. It seems
a warehouse in Lagos can match it! A particular problem in these conditions
is mould/fungal growth, it can get everywhere and is obviously a real
problem when it gets on the inside of lenses. It can also corrode metal, I
remember some aluminum video disks that were stripped of their
Chrome/Nickel/Cobalt/Copper coatings in only a couple of months storage at
an airport warehouse.
What I have found after many years of experience, is that equipment is
pretty safe if accompanied by humans! We were once asked to demonstrate a
camera's ability to withstand the heat of the desert in Jordan, where they
had had some problems with a previous model. Since I knew that the local
cameramen were in the habit of locking off the camera and retiring to the
shade, I agreed as long as the cameraman stayed with it. After about an
hour he could stand no more and the test was concluded! They then bought
some dandy parasols for both the camera and operator and we never heard
another complaint! I am sure that if we had insisted that the Nigerian
importer had slept with our machines then that problem would have rapidly
diminished too!

VX1000 Photo Shot - Perry Mitchell

CPJ2000 posted:
>After shooting my first tape on the VX1000 about four years ago, I had
briefly tried the camera's "photo" mode and, viewing the results on industrial monitors
and on the 32" XBR100 (which I still have), could not see any difference or
'improvement' in stills shot in "photo" mode compared with freeze frames from regular footage
(I was using a DSR-20 VCR as player deck for this). To my considerable amazement,
when I watched that old tape a few evenings ago on the XBR400 I could see a very
decided improvement with the "photo" mode compared with freeze or regular still
frames of identical subjects (and with identical lighting, exposure etc.).<

This is curious, because the freeze frame should be better if the camera is
steady and there is no movement in the shot. The photo mode on the VX1000
is interpolated from a single field which will therefore show more signs of
'stairstepping' in my experience. I have to question Charles' vision (I'm
allowed to do this as an 'old fart') since I can clearly see this on even a
9inch Sony monitor!
