We put camera color bars on analog field tapes so that the editor could adjust his playback deck levels to match the material recorded. The edited master would include color bars (and tone) to allow similar adjustments down the analog chain. Digital decks don't have level adjustments for digital transfer, and indeed they don't need them. There are however several possible variations of the DV 'standard', particularly in 525 land, and there is a good argument to say that suitable color bars will identify exactly what 'non standard' is being used. By definition this requires the producer to know what levels are pertinent, and to blindly put 'THE' correct levels on is not much use to anybody other than as John says, to provide a convenient source for monitor alignment. A Vaio I recently tested had a Premiere plug-in in the folder with the DV Gate files. You can easily disable DV Gate and replace it with an alternative for stand alone capture, as I did with the DO EditDV application.
