FCP v EditDV - Adam Wilt

My question was concerned with the differences between FCP and EditDV when
> used on a G4 with dual processsing.
Both utilize the dual CPUs, as long as (a) you download the dual-CPU update
from Digital Origin for EditDV or (b) Install QT 5 for FCP. QT 5's codec is
the faster of the two in either single- or dual-CPU Macs.
> Can someone justify the cost of spending twice as much on one rather
> than the other ?
Yes, easily. If the more expensive program works more naturally with the way
you think, you'll save huge amount of time and frustration for the added cost.
Well worth it. If, OTOH, EditDV and you see eye-to-eye but FCP seems alien,
then EditDV would be worth twice the price -- to you. Right?
> Which is easiest to learn ?
See previous answer. They're very different. They both have their own quirks
and workflows. Which one works best for you depends on how you think about
NLE and the way you go about working.
> Are there any alternatives ?
Premiere 6.0. A really solid upgrade on 5.X. Nothing revolutionary, really,
just lots of little tweaks here and there in the UI design and in the workflow
model. Adobe has learned, apparently, from things like Incite and FAST Studio.

ORIG POST ON: PD150 Prog Scan - Adam Wilt

If someone can describe a way to "test" it without exotic test gear I will
> attempt to.
1) Place a resolution test chart in front of the camera. Observe the image on
a decent CRT monitor.
2) Switch either to 1/30 sec shutter speed, or any but the first setting in
FLASH mode. Observe how the horizontal resolution wedges lose resolution, and
alias horribly. Also look at the center circles (which span only a couple of
scanlines) and see how badly they get screwed up.
Cheers,
Adam Wilt

PD150 Prog Scan - 15 or 30 fps - Adam Wilt

There's a lot of talk about this mode and was wondering why it's so
> important--Is this the way to shoot if transfering to film?
In PAL, 25fps proscan (or faked proscan) video transfers to film very nicely.
In NTSC, 30fps frame-mode tape to film is a disaster. See my DVExpo handout on
digital filmmaking at http://www.adamwilt.com/DVExpo.html.

AJW
