Mount your video camera and then extend the tripod legs sufficiently so that the whole thing balances at a suitable holding point just below the camera. Hold the unit between your first finger and thumb. (This obviously will only work with a lightweight combination) If this gives you sufficient stabilisation then fine, and if you want something with more control then try the SteadyTracker range. I think Promax bought them up. If you need more stabilisation but with less control then you need to look at one of the many systems using a gimbal. Warning - they are very difficult to get the hang of! What you now have to do is avoid the dreaded drop-outs. The normal DV processing will attempt concealment by using statistical probability of video, but this is presumably done in the DV decoding so can be avoided by directly accessing the compressed data. If you want to maintain overall efficiency then you will need some form of parity or more sophisticated error checking. I have proposed the DV format just for recording the data needed to archive an NLE project, where such data would be a very small proportion of the whole tape, most of which is of course DV video clips. In such situations it would be simplest to just record the data several times and use a majority voting process.
