Field Render Order - Adam Wilt

What is the correct field render order for DV?
Lower field first.

Almost all other capture cards/formats are upper field first. DV is annoyingly
different in this way.
When adding DV into a non-DV composition or project, you'll usually get better
results bumping the DV footage up or down one scanline, effectively reversing
its filed order to match the comp. Likewise, non-DV footage (by which I mean
footage not captured to DV format, whatever its original source; BetaSP
captured through a DVCAM deck or through a DVMC-DA1 *is* DV as far as AE or
FCP knows) should be offset one scanline when placed into a DV project.

Image degradation - Adam Wilt

Due to limited disk space (65gig), I am often forced on occasion to export

If your on-disk format is DV, you will see NO image degradation or change by
transferring between tape and disk. It's a bit-for-bit copy over FireWire.

Mini DV Video Tape - Adam Wilt

Is it still advisable to not mix mini video tape between Brand

Yes, even without degaussing. I've gone 300 record/rewind/recue/play passes on
a DV tape before seeing an increase in dropout.

monitoring sound in post - Adam Wilt

for someone who likes portability, is it viable, or even suggested to use

I do it.
Many people recommend against it because the dynamics of headphone monitoring
are not the same as with open-air speakers. If anything the headphones give
you a more critical appraisal, revealing every level change and defect that
might otherwise be masked by ambient environmental noise. On the flip side the
isolation a set of cans provide makes things more intelligible than they would
be through speakers. Without awareness of these effects, you might mix a track
that suffers from too much finesse over inaudible details yet suffers from an
overall lack of clarity.
But if you learn to calibrate your ears to these effects, 'phones are a great
way to work on the run.
