4:1:1 Question

4:1:1 Question - "Perry"

lines, 525, and the number of scan lines in DV, 480... is the rest the
result of underscan and such, or am I just confusing myself again?<
525 broadcast tv (usually NTSC) actually only uses 486 lines for pictures,
the rest is what is called vertical blanking and is used for all sorts of
housekeeping stuff which is not recorded.
DV likes to have blocks of pixels 16x16 to work with, so they reduced it
further to 480 lines.
In case you wonder where the 720 samples per line come from, they decided to
make it the same for 525 and 625 and 720 was a good mid Atlantic compromise!
