Lens choice for DSR500
Sony Mini DV stock DVM60R
the 20GB iBook only comes from Apple!
Waveform Monitors & Perfect Exposure

Lens choice for DSR500 - "Perry"

From: Danny Grizzle
Only you know how you work and what you might be shooting, but in my
opinion, too many videographers vastly overrate two factors: the value of
zoom ratio (i.e. thinking 18x is better than 12x), and the value of a 2x
converter. Zoom ratios like 18x are numbers games, easy to achieve in
telephoto focal lengths, but hardly useful unless considered along with
angle of view.
Wide angle zooms usually have shorter ratio specs, but offer much more
radical change in angle of view and perspective, factors far more important
from a visual & esthetic standpoint.

> What's the difference between Sony's PR and EX Series miniDV?
> The EX has a superior Carrier to Noise ratio of about 2db over the PR
I remember when digital formats were emerging, the early magazine articles
claimed that it would eliminate the need for exotic, premium tape
formulations.
I can see how binders and drop out specs are critical, but I fail to see why
S/N specification is a significant factor with digital recording.

the 20GB iBook only comes from Apple! - Adam Wilt

Standard Apple contractual limitation. But you don't have to buy an Apple
product from Small Dog to become a Top Dawg. I bought a PowerLogix CPU upgrade
to hot up my Powerbook, and now I can buy any new Apple product from the Dogs.
So go buy a FireWire drive from 'em, and THEN buy the iBook to plug it into.
And sign up for the "Kibbles & Bytes" Newsletter, too. Don Mayer announces
some sales only in the newletter; the sales sometimes have great deals on
Macs, accessories, and other stuff -- even a classic car or two has shown up!
Cheers,

Waveform Monitors & Perfect Exposure - "Perry"

From: Bruce A. Johnson
>Why can't camera manufacturers build a software waveform
monitor into pro-level digital cameras like the DSR-500WS?<
They can. They don't. Most users wouldn't know what to do with it.
I remember way back in the mists of memory a JVC camera that
had a line at the bottom of the VF that corresponded to the max
white level. Today, it's just zebra.
