Using Digital Still Images in DV (was: Digital Still CameraR [OFF] Digital Still Camera Recommendation - (2) Don't adjust that new flat screen? - Adam Wilt I just bought a new 20" Panasonic flat TV with s-video in. If I leave > all the levels in the middle my VX-2000 footage is WAY too muddy. My > camera exposures are done with 100% zebra. If I pump up the levels > (picture and brightness) I can get a good looking picture on the TV. How does other video look? The display device should be calibrated to its inputs, not the other way around. If all video dislpayed onscreen looks flat and muddy, regardless of source, tweak the TV's brightness and contrast. If other video sources look good, when plugged into the same S-Video input, then have the analog outputs of your camera looked at. They might be miscalibrated. If other vide sources look muddy plugged into the S-Video connection, but over-the-air signals look OK, have the TV checked for a mismatched gain on the S-video input. > My bets are Set-up. Does the VX has a choice for adding Set-up? The VX2000 has a set-up option, but don't use it! For one thing, it adds "setup" incorrectly, by washing out the blacks in the picture -- actually raising the black level in the digital signal instead of adding setup on the analog outputs. Second, it won't fix the muddy-pix problem; if anything, it'll make things look worse. Cheers, Adam Wilt Hail to Technobabylon / chronosynclastic - Adam Wilt So it goes, Adam Wilt use tapes once only? - Adam Wilt sorry the d came out instead of the 8 (it's not a hid camera but a hi8) Hi8 tapes start to show visibly increased dropout almost immediately. I prefer to shoot on a new tape, review the footage as little and as carefully as possible, ands then to edit straight away. Too much shuttling back and forth is death on Hi8 -- perhaps 5-15 plays are the limit if you're concerned about dropout. > the camera i use is : Sony Hi8 CCD-VX1E/PAL - its not dv but suppose the > principles of the tape use are the same? The digital tapes, because of the robustness of the signal compared to the playback of the analog signal, can often be replayed or reused literally hundreds of times (in my experience) before they start to show problems. With the analog tapes, any signal loss due to dropout is immediately visible (and will keep the deck's dropout compensator quite busy). With digital, the signal can degrade considerably before the deck can no longer tell whether a "1" or a "0" was read from tape. However, tape wear and signal degradation ARE happening, even if it's not immediately visible. For all really important stuff I use new tapes. Cheers, Adam Wilt Using Digital Still Images in DV (was: Digital Still CameraR - "Perry" From: Danny Grizzle I'm planning to use Adobe After Effects as a virtual Oxberry Camera to pan & scan the digital stills. A week ago, I was listening to the DV Guys show, and Phillip recommended using an AE plug-in called "Twixtor" to create ultra-smooth motion from digital stills. I thought After Effects would do this chore out-of-the-box, but Phillip said Twixtor was necessary for truly professional results. I read the website above, and Twixtor seems great for creating slow-mo and time stretching footage. I can see that this might also aid with move on still photos, but still I wonder... Anyone have any experience of comments? [OFF] Digital Still Camera Recommendation - Adam Wilt I am in the market for a high quality digital still camera that is > roughly in the 1,000 neighborhood or lower... You can get pretty much all you're asking for except, in my experience, the do-it-now responsiveness of a 35mm SLR. I echo Danny Grizzle's excellent recommendation of http://www.dpreview.com, and suggest following the links on dpreview's links pages for other viewpoints. Personally I have the Sony DSC-505V (), a.k.a "the King", about to be replaced with the DSC-F707, , "the Dark Angel". The 707 appears to fix most of the operational deficiencies of the 505V (except for lack of a histogram display, and an insufficient wide angle on the zoom, though I use my VX1000's VCL-0752H wide angle adapter on the 505V to solve that problem). The form factor on these cams is odd, but use it and you'll never be satisfied with anything more conventional again. All the photos in my DV Mag articles, other than frame captures from DV and Adobe Illustrator graphics, are from the 505V. Cheers, Adam Wilt [OFF] Digital Still Camera Recommendation - "Perry" http://www.dpreview.com appears to be a truly excellent site with very comprehensive reviews. I am intrigued that judging by the content of the sample pictures, the testing is done in London. Is this a UK site?
