AMD now brings quad-processing for the masses? Of rudi - 1 Jun 2006 14:12:00
After dual-core processors to roam for several months, the mainstream market, and really reasonable prices are available, of course, many users are wondering when they will come cheap quad systems on the market. For, as demonstrated by, among other things, our current AFX benchmark, especially video applications to take advantage of several cores, particularly clear. However, quad-Macs and dual dual Opteron workstations still prohibitively expensive. That could change today, when the A & D are to believe blog. Because of these claims that AMD will now introduce a new special socket designed for motherboards that allows two dual-core processors into a motherboard to plug. Price should be raised here primarily to high-end gamer market, but such motherboards might have to quickly considerably cheaper than a dual-workstation boards.
Particularly interesting is the question of whether you need this then true dual-core Opterons, or whether the normal AMD X2 series for the dual-dual-open operation. That would be a real attack against Intel's new Core2Duo series (codenamed Conroe), which is indeed rumored to play in the same league as AMD. However, the new Intel desktop processors be-delivered until July. But while we're at rumors: The new PowerMacs are based on the bauähnlichen Woodcrest processors of Intel, which is why it is not unlikely that would see the presentation of the first Intel Quad PowerMacs still in June. More specifically, as between the 19th and 25 June, because in this period are already the Xeon successor delivered, compared to the Opterons make good ground. Should these rumors prove true, we could perhaps in the fall pretty cheap quad machines see in the shops.

Where have you put the info from? Apple insider said of the new Xserve models in July (which will then have the Woodcrest in there) and of Poermacs with Conroe chips in August.
The only thing I would be surprised that Apple would be practically of the 2 processor machine (I mean dual boards, not dual core - that they are now, I guess all) in a one processor machine would go with the PowerMac, which I do not really can imagine.

If I may speculate times: there are only the high end PowerMac with Woodcrest and later on the entry-level models with a chip on Conroebasis, but the biggest problem perhaps Intel should fix: when there's finally a suitable motherboards for the new Woodcrest or synonymous Dempsey chips for workstations? For servers, Tyan which would have in the range, but they are to get anywhere, although the chips based on Dempsey already exist. iWill and Super Micro have indeed in the pipeline, but are synonymous here, the boards do not get.
What use is the best chip if there is no board for it? Here, Intel should really make steam.

Our informants, of course, enjoy protection of sources;)

No, but even seriously: There are rumors that Apple is just Woodcrest in the new PowerMacs uses, and for three reasons:

1. Woodcrest is faster s.Markt, and Steve Jobs is getting impatient. Lastly, the so constantly on your own website, that suggests a MacBook for a thousand euros in some benchmarks to its own quad-Mac. Steve Jobs wants to surprise you and bring the Power Macs faster than anyone expected.

2. The new Power Macs should again bring far more power than the iMac and the MacBook (Pro). Here it would erstmal not care whether one takes Conroe and Woodcrest. AAAAB ...

3. It is again a QuadMac ago, much of the old standing in the rain. A PowerMac with only two cores as a top model should be avoided whenever possible. Only a dual-dual system with Conroe is not to build but to (unless Intel opens the Conroe for this application to AMD's Socket 4x4 trick.)

According to current knowledge only for a dual Woodcrest Dual System are ready. So they have to in the Intel Quad-Mac. And if Steve wants to tell about the new models with Intel together. Say Woodcrest come, synonymous like Apple wants to flaunt it.

Aaaaaber, that's all classified only half-baked from a source, that is really still definitely in the Kathegorie rumor ... Must therefore come not so, but who knows ...

May be synonymous, of course, that Apple is waived only once on a new quad and dual Conroe only against July and August .... extradite the other hand, says that there is still a new eMac is in the pipeline, which then allows the PowerMacs look even less interesting .. .

It remains exciting

Rudi

Do not know what's even have a few, yet the Woodcrest Xeon for dual processor systems, Intel would be pretty stupid if they open the Conroe "for dual-socket operation (which is synonymous is always open" hot ", as one might times when just a SMT module raufkleben or so). Then we would make the Woodcrest almost superfluous. The CPU is not synonymous to say yes "Woodcrest" but "Xeon DP 51xx," where DP stands for nothing other than dual-processor. Woodcrest is just meant to build quad-core system with 2 sockets.

And then in 2007 had come before Clovertown and Kentsfield quad-core processors ... The Apple will indeed be possible for the top models of PowerMacs (possibly pick up then as a MacPro).

Speaking Woodcrest: whether Intel has any single-core Xeon with Dempsey sold? I can not imagine how ...
