The Firewire brings you nothing, as the AHD has no firewire port - and these need not synonymous - so the material is recorded directly to memory card and not on tape.
. mov is a Quicktime format of Apple. Do you have Quicktime installed? Perhaps this could be because the videos can not be imported.
Bzgl. the conversion, you have probably a very compressed format (AVI is not AVI) - use the program SUPER (freeware) and convert the files in AVI or MPEG2 with 4 codec and the highest possible bitrate.
And last solution - a program which supports Quicktime, for example, is Premiere Elements.
