DVL-Digest 1006 - Postings: Index Broadcast aspect ratio (BBC, West Wing) - (2) DV PAL or NTSC? - (2) - (3) - (4) - (5) Logo questions - (2) Broadcast aspect ratio (BBC, West Wing) - "Perry Mitchell" From: Eric Bin Q: Noticed while watching my NTSC version of the BBC News (great show BTW) that it had a pair of black bars going across top and bottom. They weren't substantial so it wasn't 16:9. Then I flipped over to West Wing (for the first time, great show!) and saw even bigger bars. Does anyone know what aspect ratio they are shooting at? West Wing had a really nice film like look to it as well - any ideas on what they shoot with? Broadcast aspect ratio (BBC, West Wing) - "Perry Mitchell" From: C2001 Unfortunately they're even doing this for some R2 DVD releases, notably S1 of "This Life", though I have to concede it looks pretty good, though not as good a widescreen-anamorphic PAL. BTW, Perry, do you know offhand if "This Life" was filmed at 24 or 25 fps? DV PAL or NTSC? - "Perry Mitchell" From: Ramez A. Ghazzaoui Guys, guys, guys. Maybe I didn't express myself clearly. I am an amateur, a regular everyday Joe, planning to buy a commercial MiniDV camcorder and at the same time looking for a videographer to document my upcoming wedding. >edit< To be honest with you I can barely understand 30% of all the technical mumbo jumbo the two of you are throwing at each other (and at me :-) My question is soooo much below your level of expertise. DV PAL or NTSC? - "Perry Mitchell" From: Alexei Gerulaitis Correct. Every mass-market digital camcorder can be classified as either NTSC or PAL. Probably applies to analog, too. The exception is the "High Definition TV" but we aren't talking about it here. I don't know of any camcorder that is multiformat (can be switched between NTSC and PAL) although some people on this list claim that they can do that. Some decks like DSR-11 are NTSC/PAL switchable. DV PAL or NTSC? - "Perry Mitchell" From: montxo de soto there are 3 diferent HD systems. america, europe and japan. I've been working in HD Pal for more than one year, but it was nine years ago. Incredible quality!! At the time there was no compression so we used to rent an HD system in France (their HD system isn't secam). We used two D1 vcr working together, 625 lines per vcr wich makes 1250... this is another difference betwen HD pal and HD ntsc. But this first analog system is very differnt to the new Panasonic DV system. DV PAL or NTSC? - "Perry Mitchell" Monxto Calm down a little, take your foot out of your mouth, and maybe we could all listen to what you want to say! The Philips HD system was an interesting experiment, conducted in conjunction with the BBC and other European Broadcasters, but had little prospect of long term life. It was initially heavily subsidised by the EU which kept it alive. Philips are of course no longer in the broadcast business, having sold out this year to Thomson who are now the last European manufacturer of broadcast cameras. 1250 HiDef was competing with the Japanese 'Hi-Vision' system which NHK broadcasts as an analog signal on 1125 lines. Sony made its HDTV kit initially to support Hi-Vision but actually sold systems mostly in the industrial market. HDTV was initially recorded on a dedicated analog one inch reel to reel tape, but later progressed to a digital system on the same transport. HiDef then entered the 'silly season' where the US were trying to decide their future broadcast format, including many possible options for higher resolution pictures with either interlaced or progressive scan. Just about any possible format was probably shown at an exhibition somewhere! 1125 had been chosen as a compromise between 1050 and 1250 as a possible 'world format' but who knows what will actually happen now! In parallel with all this tv stuff is of course the Digital Cinema stuff like for instance Sony's CineAlta 24fps kit that Lucas is using for StarWars. This uses a very complex compression scheme to squeeze the pictures onto a Digital Betacam transport and give a camcorder design. I can still remember watching some pictures shot at the LA Olympics on a single Sony HDVS camera just locked down at a 'good seat position' in the athletics stadium. It was just like being there and was pure magic! I can also remember many vastly over produced concerts where the format was completely lost! Producing in Hi-Def can be a nightmare for sets, make-up and lighting and this means vast expense. I am not convinced HiDef will ever happen for the mass market but what do I know! Perry Mitchell DV PAL or NTSC? - "Perry Mitchell" From: Karl Lohninger In what way is HDEF shooting different than a) film - if you're coming from this side or b) video - if that's what you're doing? What's the nightmare of it respectively where are the vast expenses coming in? Logo questions - "Perry Mitchell" Alexei I think we have to give Montxo a little rope, his use of English is not I believe meant to be as rude as it may come across. Jeez, I have enough trouble addressing the nuances of English as used on either side of the pond! I also believe that Montxo is already managing to hang himself pretty good with the amount of rope he already has!! One small comment on the logo question - whatever the obvious causes of twitter, there is no doubt that specialist broadcast equipment such as a Character Generator can possess 'magic' filtering to make better use of graphic material. My Aston Motif ALWAYS looks better in interlaced video than anything I can produce on the Mac - I can make supersharp logos that twitter, or I can make soft logos that don't, but the Aston manages a good compromise up the middle. It is possible of course to 'cheat' on the Mac and to produce artwork with no odd number of line content, but that probably won't go down well with the logo police! Perry Mitchell Logo questions - "Perry Mitchell" From: tberens Assuming the final logo in my DV comp has 2-pixel width strokes, does anyone have any recommendations on what setting I should apply with the Reduce Interlace Flicker effect?
