14-bit 4K RAW on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra vs. 8K RAW with the CANON R5

bild Xiaomi is advertising its current flagship smartphone 14 Ultra with 14 f-stops for video recording, among other things. Numerous sensors for smartphone cameras now have a DGO mode for high dynamic range. This means that the sensor can be read with two different exposures at the same time (or at least at the same time) and the two images can then be combined into one frame.

Manufacturers can then use their own apps to utilise the increased dynamic range in their own camera app. However, the DGO files cannot usually be ‘passed through’ to third-party apps. It is currently unclear whether this is due to the Android camera API or a deliberate restriction by the manufacturers.

However, the developers of the MotionCam camera app now seem to have found a way to use DGO for RAW recordings in their own app on a Xiaomi 14 Ultra. And also on a Xiaomi 13 Ultra, by the way.

To demonstrate how good the results can be, the manufacturer has also uploaded a comparison with 8K RAW images taken with a Canon R5. Here is the post without noise reduction:

As you can clearly see, computational videography continues to make great strides towards us. Now it would actually be time for us to see a significant improvement in the dynamic range of cameras with larger sensors, but

still doesn&t seem to be in sight at the moment.
