Tascam introduces the DR-40XP mobile 4-track audio recorder. It features a range of technical improvements over its predecessors, the DR-40 and DR-40X, and is designed to offer even further optimized sound quality. With adjustable stereo microphones (XY/AB), low-noise HDDA microphone preamps, and XLR/TRS combo inputs with phantom power, it is aimed at users including video producers.

New features include support for 32-bit float resolution and a revised housing design. According to Tascam, both combined enable professional-quality recordings with simple operation and minimal setup effort.
The two new adjustable condenser microphones on the DR-40XP are designed to have more effective shielding against radio interference from smartphones and other devices, which should be particularly noticeable during quiet recordings. In addition, the input sensitivity can now be selected for both XLR/TRS inputs. Tascam's proprietary HDDA (High Definition Discrete Architecture) microphone preamps are also intended to contribute to reduced noise. According to the manufacturer, the equivalent input noise is -126 dBu.
Tascam cites higher clock accuracy (10 ppm instead of 30 ppm), better sound from the built-in speaker, and faster recording starts due to the elimination of the recording pause as further improvements.
Like its predecessors, the DR-40XP features an overwrite function for punch-in recordings, a mixing function with level, pan, and effect controls for each track, an MS decoder, and much more. Via its USB-C port, it can function as an audio interface for Windows and Mac computers as well as iOS devices, and can also be used as a USB microphone with these devices.
For audio recording on film sets, a slate tone signal for audio-video synchronization is on board, as well as a stereo line output via mini-jack.
Audio is recorded onto microSDXC cards with up to 512 gigabytes of storage space, and the operating time is said to be up to 30 hours (using lithium batteries).

The Tascam DR-40XP is scheduled to be available in April and will cost 259 euros.
