With the Astral Mini Plus, Sound Devices has introduced a new digital wireless bodypack transmitter for theater, film, broadcast, and live productions. It is worn on the body—usually on a belt, costume, or under clothing—and serves to wirelessly transmit the signal from a lavalier microphone or other small microphone to a receiver or audio mixer. ![]() Sound Devices Astral Mini Plus New features include IP67 certification, meaning the transmitter is protected against dust, water, and sweat, allowing it to be used in outdoor productions and poor weather conditions. Battery life has been nearly doubled and is now over eight hours, powered by one or two XL-B14500 battery cells. Thanks to the integrated USB-C charging function, the battery can be recharged without the need for a special charger. The tuning range has also been expanded and now spans from 169 to 1525 MHz. This wide frequency coverage is intended to facilitate international use, as different frequency bands are available in different countries. Other features include RFID-based "tap-to-pair" for faster setup with the receiver, a vibration function for device identification, and a practical ePaper display. This display remains readable even without a battery inserted—and even in direct sunlight—which can simplify the organization and preparation of multiple transmitters. The Astral Mini Plus also offers an internal recording function in 32-bit float at 48 kHz on the integrated 64 GB storage, for example, as a backup track to protect against distorted recordings. The Astral Mini Plus can be remote-controlled via Bluetooth or—over longer distances—via NexLink, and it features an internal timecode generator for audio synchronization. For audio processing, Sound Devices utilizes its "GainForward" architecture. This eliminates the need for traditional gain adjustment on the transmitter; instead, the level is managed centrally at the mixer. According to Sound Devices, GainForward is designed to capture every nuance of speech or musical performance—from whispering to screaming—in the highest possible audio quality and without any risk of clipping.
