AI revival announced for 100 Hong Kong classics

[09:36 Sat,5.July 2025   by blip]

China is stepping on the gas when it comes to AI, not least in the film sector. At the Shanghai Film Festival at the end of June, AI was clearly celebrated as an opportunity for the future. But not only that: With the technology, they even want to "cultivate" their cinematic past.

Within the framework of a new "Kung Fu Film Heritage Project", 100 martial arts classics are to be re-released with the help of AI. What exactly the revision will entail is unclear. However, in addition to image and sound restoration, the general aesthetics also seem to be a goal in order to make these films appear more contemporary. "AI Revitalization" is the buzzword.

Bruce Lee&s "Fist of Fury" (1972), Jackie Chan&s "Drunken Master" (1978) and Tsui Hark&s "Once Upon a Time in China" (1991) with Jet Li in the leading role are to be affected by the facelift. The fact that AI-based revisions of older films are not always pleasing to the eye (James Cameron had to realize this last year when he reaped scorn for the upscaled 4K versions of some of his films - see: www.slashcam.de/news/single/KI-verschlimmbessert-Hollywood-Klassiker-fuer-neue--18642.html), it remains to be seen how the Kung Fu classics will fare.

At the film festival, a remake of John Woo&s "A Better Tomorrow" was also announced, which is being touted as the world&s first completely AI-produced animated film. The film "A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border" appears to be already completed; a trailer was shown at the event, but unfortunately no clips can (yet) be found on the Internet. According to the producer, the film was created by a team of 30. Traditionally, the credit list of animated feature films includes 10 to 100 times as many names. At another event where various AI technologies were demonstrated, it was said (according to Variety - see: variety.com/2025/film/news/shanghai-international-film-festival-2025-five-key-takeaways-1236437895/) - very fittingly - that render farms in Chinese Guizhou could already process visual effects tasks in 24 hours today, which used to take 400 days.

Kling AI is also cutting in roughly the same vein. One of the Chinese providers of AI video models was able to win over nine well-known Chinese film directors with its "Movie Co-Creation Plan" (app.klingai.com/global/director-plan) to create a short film with AI.
