Analog Film Simulation: ARRI Film Lab: Proven Color Science from Munich in an OpenFX Plugin

[12:59 Wed,12.November 2025   by Rudi Schmidts]

ARRI has announced a new, license-based OpenFX plugin for post-production software designed to enrich digital images with the look and feel of analog film material. The "ARRI Film Lab" draws on the company&s renowned color expertise and offers simple creative control over grain, color, halation effects, and the slight image unsteadiness (Gate Weave) associated with analog film materials and post-processes.

Based on ARRI&s long-standing experience in film and digital image processing—from ARRILASER and ARRISCAN to the latest REVEAL Color Science—ARRI now aims to pack decades of research into a real-time plugin for modern post-production tools. ARRI Film Lab is intended to breathe analog life into digital images while offering creative control, consistency, and ease of use.

The adjustable parameters within ARRI Film Lab encompass the key characteristics of analog film material processed in a traditional photochemical lab. Grain strength can be set to the equivalent of a 50D, 200T, or 500T negative film. Color settings include various print materials and processes such as Reversal and Bleach Bypass. The intensity of color and grain can be adjusted continuously, as can the strength of the Halation effect—which recreates the reddish-orange halo around bright areas and contrast edges caused by light reflection within the film layers—and Gate Weave, which simulates the slight movement of the image plane in the film projector.

As an OpenFX plugin, ARRI Film Lab is compatible with leading color grading environments such as DaVinci Resolve, Baselight, Nuke, and others. It enables real-time 4K processing of RGB images from ARRI and third-party cameras and supports LogC3 (AWG3) and LogC4 (AWG4) workflows. Support for ACES 2.0 is already planned and under development. ARRI Film Lab can also be used regardless of the recording format—ARRICORE, ARRIRAW, ProRes, or a third-party codec.

A unique aspect of ARRI Film Lab is that, following an upcoming camera firmware update, non-destructive previews will be possible "Live on Set"—when recording with the ALEXA 35 Xtreme or ALEXA 35 in ARRICORE or ARRIRAW. A simulation of the desired film look is achieved in-camera through a combination of ARRI Textures and 3D LUTs. This allows viewfinders and monitors to deliver images that give a strong impression of the intended grain and color characteristics. No additional hardware is required, and since nothing is "baked in," full creative freedom is maintained at every production stage. Later in post-production, the plugin offers even more powerful grain and texture capabilities, as well as Halation and Gate Weave.

Included with ARRI Film Lab is a special plugin version of the established ARRI Look Library, allowing users to explore the diverse palette of LUTs within a plugin environment. This offers a new way to access the library&s predefined looks, which ARRI has developed for various environments and production types.

ARRI Film Lab is available immediately through RE:Vision Effects. After a one-week free trial, affordable licenses for individuals can be purchased monthly, annually, or permanently. Prices are for one month, for one year, or for a permanent license. For companies, licenses can also be purchased based on the number of users; special conditions apply for educational institutions.

The plugin works with Autograph, Baselight, Flame, Fusion Studio, Natron, Nuke, Resolve, Scratch, and Silhouette. The in-camera preview function will be unlocked via a software update for the ALEXA 35 in the first quarter of 2026. The plugin is fundamentally compatible with any camera that can be integrated into an ARRI pipeline.
