Apple event on September 14: iPhone 13 is coming - with ProRes and Bokeh for video?

[17:30 thu,9.September 2021   by ]

Apple has announced a big online event for September 14 for 7 pm German time - from the timing is pretty clear that the new iPhone 13 will be presented - about other news can only be speculated: perhaps also comes the also annually due new model of the Apple Watch, so the number 7sowie perhaps also new Air Pods.

Apple event announcement

The rumors

Guesses, rumors and speculations are of course also around the technical details of the new different model variants of the iPhone 13, but as always Apple is so secretive that can not really say for sure. Various sources, however, report possible new features such as a 1TB storage option, a smaller notch and larger battery, ProMotion displays with a higher refresh rate (probably 120 Hz), next-generation WLAN, an expansion of 5G connectivity, and a significant upgrade to camera and MagSafe functionality.

There are even more detailed rumors regarding the upgrade of the rear camera, which is of particular interest to us, with Apple Insider Mark Gurman reporting the possibility of recording video in ProResProRes im Glossar erklärt (which would explain a new 1 TB storage option) as well as a "Cinematic Video" movie mode, which allows for a subsequent bokeh effect including changes to lighting and background effects in videos as well. In addition, there should be an object-based filter system for photos, i.e. effects can only be applied to selected image objects.

How sure this information is, can only be said after the presentation, an always right reliable leaker does not exist.

Apple&s AR Easteregg in the announcement

Apple itself possibly gives a cryptic hint to innovations of the iPhone 13 by means of an Easter egg: whoever visits the Apple Event Website with a newer iPhone or iPad and taps the Apple logo there, an augmented reality app opens for him, which lets the Apple logo float in the user&s room by means of the camera. By touching it, it can be moved in the room or it can be enlarged in such a way that one virtually dives in and enters the virtual night scene of the graphic of the event announcement, in which the date floats large in the room. This could be interpreted as a hint at upcoming photo or AR capabilities of the new iPhone.

One thing is (relatively) certain: it will be more expensive

Reasonably feared, however, is an increase in the price of the new and also the current products due to the global chip shortage. Thus Heise reports from informed circles from the Asian supplier industry, which assume that due to numerous increased cost of individual components the costs for all Apple models rise and consider it very likely that Apple passes on these price increases to its customers in the form of rising prices, so the new top model - probably the iPhone 13 Pro Max - could perhaps already pierce the 2,000 euro price ceiling.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max

The large Taiwanese chip manufacturerTSMC, which produces the processors for the iPhones, iPads and new M1 Macs for Apple, among others, will raise its prices by up to 20%. It is therefore assumed that the iPhone 13 will be significantly more expensive in all variants than its comparable predecessor models at the time of market launch. The new MacBooks Pros with M1X processor, which will probably be launched in the fall, will probably also be affected. However, since Apple still partly benefits from "old" prices that are fixed in long-term contracts, the price increase should even be significantly higher next year.

The Apple event can be viewed either via livestream on apple.com or via the Apple TV app.
