Better AF and C2PA: New Firmware for Sony Alpha 1 II and Sony Alpha 9 III Brings Many New Features

[13:31 Thu,30.October 2025   by Thomas Richter]

Sony has just released new firmware for its full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens cameras, the Sony Alpha 1 II (ILCE-1M2) and Sony Alpha 9 III (ILCE-9M3). The new Version 4.0 brings, among other things, Real-time Recognition Autofocus (AF+) with improved human recognition, enables the use of the preset focus function for zoom lenses without power zoom, and supports the recording of authenticity information for photos.

The Alpha 9 III also receives a range of other new functions, such as more precise adjustment options for automatic subject type recognition and a vertical display of shooting information. Some of these new features are expected to be available for other Sony Alpha models in the near future. New versions are also available for Sony&s Catalyst Browse, Catalyst Prepare, and the Catalyst Prepare Plugin for Adobe Premiere Pro and Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve.

Key New Features for the Sony Alpha 1 II and Alpha 9 III

- Support for **Real-time Recognition Autofocus (AF+) with improved human recognition**: Thanks to improved body posture estimation technology, the camera can continuously track initially captured subjects with high accuracy, even in challenging sports scenes where athletes& paths cross.

- Support for **recording authenticity information** now also in videos: C2PA authenticity data, previously only available for photos, can now be attached as digital signatures to video recordings to verify the authenticity of recordings. The Sony Alpha 1, Alpha 7R V, and Alpha 7 IV are also expected to receive this function from November 2025 or later, and the Alpha 7S III next year.

- Activation of the **preset focus function for zoom lenses** without power zoom: The preset focus function can now also be used with zoom lenses without power zoom.

In addition, the Alpha 9 III receives the following updates:

- **Adding "Auto" to the Recognition Target**: When "Auto" is selected in the "Recognition Target" subject setting, the camera automatically selects a subject from the recognition targets that have been checked on the[Auto Recognition Target] screen. When "Auto" is selected, the camera usually automatically recognizes the subject type, but in some situations, the wrong type may be selected. In such cases, the problem can be resolved by the new manual selection option for the desired subject type.

- **Support for vertical orientation** for the shooting information layout: The shooting information layout displayed on the screen now supports both horizontal and vertical orientation. The Sony Alpha 1, Alpha 7R V, and Alpha 7 IV are expected to receive this function from November 2025 or later.
