Big Mobile Light: Godox KNOWLED AM800R – Inflatable 4×4 Soft Light with 800 Watts and Full-Color Engine

Following the large AM1600R, Godox is now introducing the KNOWLED AM800R, a new model in its lineup of inflatable LED panel lights—featuring the popular 4×4 format for the first time. The result is an 800-watt RGBWW mat light with an IP65 rating, professional control options, and—above all—a weight that is significantly lower than that of classical softpanels complete with mounting frames of this size.

Lightweight, stable, and mobile thanks to air instead of aluminum

Installing traditional softpanels and rigging is relatively complex. With the AM800R, Godox is taking a different approach: the lighting frame is inflated to 8 PSI—according to the manufacturer, in about a minute—and holds this pressure for up to 15 days without needing to be re-inflated.

The luminous surface measures 1.2 x 1.2 meters (without the inflated butterfly frame). The lamp head weighs 4.95 kg, and the separate controller weighs 6.40 kg with a housing size of 31.5 x 18 x 14 cm. According to Godox, stability is provided by a carbon fiber backplate and a reinforced airframe fabric designed to withstand scratches and abrasion from frequent handling on set. However, these are manufacturer specifications that still need to be proven in everyday shooting conditions. Fortunately, an airframe repair kit is included, and the LED modules are conveniently individually replaceable.

Color technology and diffusion

The color range of the Godox KNOWLED AM800R extends from 1,800 K to 10,000 K with green-magenta correction from -100% to +100%; available modes include CCT, HSI, RGBW, GEL, XY, and FX with 12 built-in effects. Regarding color values, the AM800R has received a minor upgrade compared to the AM1600R: Godox specifies a CRI of approx. 96 and a TLCI of 98. The dimming behavior covers 0-100% across four modes (linear, S-curve, exponential, logarithmic)—and the light is also said to be flicker-free at standard frame rates, although specific frequency figures are missing from the currently available specs.

For light shaping, three different micro-structure diffusion fabrics are included (D11-32, D11-32+, and D13-30+), allowing for different degrees of softness. A honeycomb grid (AF44G) reduces stray light.

Rigging and control

The foldable U-bracket allows for 300° of tilt adjustment and supports floor mounting, boom arm rigging, and truss-free overhead rigging. D-rings on the edges allow multiple AM800Rs to be linked together to form a larger lighting surface: two create a 4x8-foot area, and four make an 8x8 panel, which is then the same size as the

AM1600R. Together with the AM1600R, the AM series thus covers three sizes: 4x4, 4x8, and 8x8 feet.

Of interest for outdoor shoots is the IP65 rating, which Godox specifies for both the lamp head and the controller—a significant improvement over the IP54 rating of the AM1600R. The operating temperature range spans from -20 °C to +45 °C.

Control options for the AM800R include wired DMX512/RDM, wireless CRMX (LumenRadio), Ethernet with Art-Net and sACN, and Bluetooth via the Godox KNOWLED app with a range of up to 60 meters. The USB-A port is used for firmware updates and also provides 5V/1.5A as an auxiliary power supply. Operation is via mains power—V-mount battery operation for mobile power supply is not provided.

Comparison to the AM1600R

The large AM1600R softpanel, which Godox introduced about a year ago, is available in two formats: as a 1.2 x 2.4 m 48K model and as a 2.4 x 2.4 m 88K model with 5.76 square meters of luminous surface—with double the power consumption at 1,600 watts. Therefore, anyone looking for a more powerful overhead light for large sets will find the AM1600R interesting.

Price and availability

At 2,849 euros, the Godox KNOWLED AM800R is significantly more affordable than the large AM1600R 48K model at 8,400 euros, or the 88K version at around 10,000 euros. The complete AM800R 44K package includes the lamp head, controller, yoke, honeycomb grid (AF44G), diffusion fabrics (D11-32, D11-32+, D13-30+), air pump, airframe repair kit, power cable, and a flight case.
