Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 20.1 - Support for immersive workflows and more

[17:09 Thu,7.August 2025   by Thomas Richter]

At the heart of the first major update for the Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 20, which was finally released in May is working with Apple Immersive Video material, which was recorded with the Blackmagic URSA Cine Immersive camera. The immersive video can now be edited, graded, and exported in Resolve - all of this, however, only in the macOS Studio version. Resolve 20.1 also brings numerous other innovations for all versions.

Immersive Workflow in DaVinci Resolve 20.1 Studio under macOS

Resolve 20.1 Studio brings macOS users support for Apple Immersive Workflows, Apple Vision Pro Monitoring, and the Apple Spatial Audio format in the form of new features and support for immersive videos in already existing functions. The central element is a new immersive video viewer, which enables the panning, tilting, and rolling of clips, as well as viewing on a 2D monitor or direct streaming to an Apple Vision Pro headset.

According to Blackmagic, thanks to the new functions, Resolve Studio is now the only application in the world that enables editing, color grading, VFX, audio post-production, and the delivery of Apple Immersive Video under one roof - using the same tools that are already known from normal editing. The stereoscopic Blackmagic RAW files in 8K with 90 fps from the URSA Cine Immersive cameras can be decoded and played back in Resolve.

In the editing module, users can work with files from the URSA Cine Immersive camera in the same way as they have previously worked with 2D videos. The new immersive Viewer shows immersive video in the original, as a LatLong representation, or in a viewport display in which the image can be freely moved.

When working with URSA Cine Immersive files in the color module, users have the complete tools for primary color correction as well as selected tools for secondary color correction. There are also new tools in the 3D palette, such as the Edge Mask. Users can adjust the field of view captured by the URSA Cine Immersive to remove microphones or other objects that are visible in the edge area of the image.

In Fusion, users can add 3D titles that jump across the field of view. The patcher and distortion tools have now been updated to work seamlessly with immersive video. The immersive patcher tool converts the immersive content of the Lens Space into a flat representation for editing and adding graphics or text. The images are then correctly reassembled and converted back into the original image in the immersive Lens Space format.

In DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.1 for macOS, users can now mix and master soundtracks with the immersive Apple Spatial Audio Format (ASAF). Fairlight offers fully integrated, native support for Ambisonics buses up to the 7th order, as well as for sound objects and channels. The 3D sound distribution has been expanded for ASAF and allows the positioning of sounds almost anywhere in 3D space, including object alignment and room sound simulation. Existing immersive audio formats can be imported, edited, and exported in the ASAF format for the Apple Vision Pro.

The media and deliver modules now offer presets for the export of Apple Immersive Video. Immersive projects can be rendered as usual with the presets and transferred to the Apple Immersive Video Utility for macOS via drag-and-drop.

Anyone who wants to try working with immersive video in DaVinci Resolve Studio 20.1 for macOS can download the corresponding material from Blackmagic.

The most important improvements for all Resolve versions

Users of the free and the Windows Studio version of Resolve will also not go away empty-handed, because all versions of Blackmagic&s grading, editing, compositing, and audio mastering program receive numerous improvements, such as the character and paragraph formatting in MultiText and the new possibility to process clip compositions in the timeline resolution. Resolve 20.1 also improves the safe area control with new custom guides, rulers, and snap functions in the editing and assembly modules. In addition, support for 32-bit floating-point arithmetic recording has been added to the editing, assembly, and Fairlight timelines. Here are the most important innovations in detail:

Keyframe Improvements

The keyframe panel has been extensively optimized. Improvements to easing ensure smoother animations, and the curve editor offers more clarity and control directly in the timeline. Keyframes are now also visible across clip boundaries. Additional functions such as a vertical zoom and a toggle shortcut for keyframe and curve view should improve efficiency when keyframe editing.

MultiText Improvements

MultiText now supports character and paragraph formatting with Fusion overlay. Individual letters or words can be customized individually - even at the paragraph level. In addition, the CSV import allows the automatic arrangement of content in column-based text boxes.

Improved Safe-Area Controls plus Guides and Rulers

The Edit page now offers rulers, custom guides, and improved automatic snap functions. These enable precise alignment of texts, clips, and graphics directly in the viewer - helpful for layouts and subtitles. This works with Text, Text+, MultiText, and Clips - as well as for the arrangement of Lower Thirds and the alignment of subtitles across multiple clips, and the organization of multiple graphic layers.

Option to Downscale Clip Compositions to Timeline Resolution

In the project settings, it can be specified that Fusion compositions in the timeline are downscaled to their resolution. This improves performance with high-resolution material in timelines with lower resolution.

32-Bit Floating Point Recording Options

Fairlight now supports recordings in 32-bit float format at 96 kHz. This allows for larger dynamic ranges without clipping - ideal for subsequent audio editing with high precision.

New Effect Search Dialog with Shift + Spacebar

A new dialog enables the quick searching and applying of effects via keyboard shortcut. Available in Cut, Edit, Fairlight, and Color. Previous effects, favorites, and library can be searched and applied directly.

Workflow Integration with Promises

The JavaScript-based API now supports asynchronous promises for more efficient processes and better processing of large amounts of data. Electron has been updated to version 36.3.2.

New Resolve FX: ColorTone Diffuser & Split Tone

The ColorTone Diffuser effect simulates cinematic light filters with softer contrast and RGB light control. The effect offers detailed control over visual parameters such as diffusion, resolution, shadow soft clipping, and RGB influence of the virtual "Tone Lights". Split Tone allows targeted color shifts in shadows and highlights to emulate film looks. There are options for a natural effect, a strong creative effect, and a fully customizable variant in which shadows and highlights can be colored as desired.

Activate/Deactivate Clips in the Timeline

Three new actions enable explicit activation, deactivation, or toggling of the clip state - each with assignable shortcuts for more control.
