Blackmagic Design Ultimatte 12: Real-time compositing and chroma keying

Blackmagic Design has released four new models of Ultimatte 12 real-time compositing processors designed for broadcast graphics creation. Released at the same time is the new free Ultimatte Software Control (Mac and Windows), which allows all new Ultimatte 12 models to be controlled via app, eliminating the need for a hardware control panel.

There are the following new models, which differ in the type and number of interfaces (and thus the video formats and resolutions processed): the Ultimatte 12 HD Mini, the Ultimatte 12 HD, the Ultimatte 12 4K and a large Ultimatte 12 8K version. All Ultimatte 12 models have built-in frame stores to key still images as backgrounds to create compositing entirely with an Ultimatte.

The same image processing algorithms operate in all Ultimatte 12 models - including the low-priced Ultimatte 12 HD Mini - meaning all models produce compositing of identical quality. Internal mats are automatically generated so that different parts of the image are processed separately according to their colors. Even fine edge details in important places like hair or smooth transitions between colors or other objects should be clearly exposed by subpixel processing.

For live productions where working quickly is important, the Ultimatte 12 models offer one-touch keying. This technology analyzes a scene and automatically sets more than 100 parameters that directly creates simply good masks.

Blackmagic Design Ultimatte 12 8K.

The optimized stray light algorithm is designed to ensure that green color casts and spill of the past (for example, in shadows or transparent objects with reflections) are largely eliminated. The Ultimatte 12 automatically samples colors, generates seamless matte for walls, floors, and other areas of the image, and corrects for them.

Ultimatte 12 4K and the Ultimatte 12 8K

The Ultimatte 12 4K and the Ultimatte 12 8K offer 12G-SDI connections for working with HD, Ultra HD and 8K video formats. 12G-SDI offers Ultra HD at high frame rates through a single BNC connector that also connects to regular HD equipment.

Ultimatte 12 HD Mini

The Ultimatte 12 HD Mini has special features for converting SDI camera control signals to HDMI. This allows an ATEM SDI mixer to control a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera connected via HDMI. The camera control signals transmitted by ATEM mixers via SDI are converted by this Ultimatte model to HDMI for the camera. Now, if the user specifies a camera number via the Ultimatte utility, he can control the in-camera color corrector, tally and also remote recording.

Ultimatte Software Control

All Ultimatte 12 models come with the free Ultimatte Software Control for Mac and Windows. The main window provides access to menus with different functions. The interface may seem intimidating at first with its many buttons and settings, but it is quickly learned to use and users can soon instinctively switch between settings when creating compositing.
