DJI Mavic 4 Pro - 6K video, 360° gimbal, RC Pro 2 and better obstacle detection

[20:00 Mon,5.May 2025   by Thomas Richter]

According to rumors, the Mavic 4 Pro was supposed to be unveiled as early as April 24, but the launch was postponed by DJI. But now it is clear that the new prosumer top model will be presented on May 13th. So shortly before the launch, almost all technical data including the (official announcement) as well as the Euro price are known and numerous new photos are online - both of the Mavic 4 Pro itself and of the new RC Pro 2 Controller and the electronic ND filter. There are some upgrades, but also some disappointments: There will be no more Cine version, which means that it will no longer be possible to record in Apple ProRes.

The most exciting innovations

In which areas has DJI improved its prosumer top model? First and foremost are video and photo recording as well as obstacle detection. The main camera can now record videos with a higher resolution - 6K instead of the previous 5.1K - and photos thanks to computational imaging even with 100 megapixels.

The completely redesigned Infinity Gimbal can rotate horizontally 360° and enables simultaneous dynamic movements in all planes. This makes it easy to produce vertical portrait shots for social media.

The obstacle detection has also been upgraded: Thanks to new light-sensitive camera sensors in all directions, obstacles can be detected and avoided even in poor lighting conditions. According to DJI, this works from as little as 0.1 lux of brightness, and thanks to the new, forward-facing LiDAR, it is possible to fly even in less light.

Based on the first images of the new electronic ND filter, it is now clear that it is removable (eND) and covers a stepless range from ND4 to ND64. It is included in the Creator Combo, but can also be purchased separately.

DJI RC Pro 2 Controller - also for vertical shots

A major innovation is the (RC Pro 2 Controller), which is included in the Creator Combo with the Mavic 4 Pro. The update of DJI&s professional remote control RC Pro has been overdue for a long time, because the RC Pro controller, which was launched in 2021 and is quite expensive at around 1,000 euros, lacks some functions. For example, it only supports DJI&s outdated O3 video transmission system and not the newer, more powerful version 4, and its 5.5" display is a bit small and could be even brighter than before (1,000 nits) for outdoor use. The battery life of only 3 hours could also be improved.

Some technical data of the RC 2 Pro are already known: It has a foldable, very bright, rotatable 7" mini-LED display that covers the controller when folded down. The new holder makes it possible to rotate the display vertically in order to see vertical (portrait) shots, e.g. for TikTok or YouTube Shorts, in the correct aspect ratio. DJI has integrated a gimmick: If the display is rotated vertically, the camera gimbal automatically switches to vertical shooting mode. Also new is a rotary control with which camera parameters such as zoom, focus, aperture or the gimbal tilt could probably be controlled more precisely than before. In addition, you can see a large HDMI port on the front in the photos (the RC Pro only had a mini HDMI output), an upgrade that many drone filmmakers had wished for. The joysticks retract automatically when the screen is folded in, i.e. they no longer have to be removed.

As with the Mini-Drohne Flip, the Mavic 4 also simplifies the starting process: No more button has to be pressed to activate the drone - only one arm of the Mavic 4 Pro has to be unfolded or the display of the RC Pro 2 has to be unfolded and the drone is active.

The known technical data of the Mavic 4 Pro

- Hasselblad main camera with 4/3" CMOS sensor with 28mm f/2-f/11 lens, video with 6K at 60 fps or 4K at 120 fps and effectively 100 megapixels
- Medium telecamera with 70 mm with 1/1.5" sensor, f/2.8 lens, ISO (400/1600), effectively 50 megapixels, video with 4K with 60 fps (HDR) or 4K with 120 fps, subject tracking focus and D-Log recording
- Telecamera with 168 mm lens and 1/1.3" sensor, f/2.8 lens, Dual Native ISO (400/1600), effectively 54 megapixels, video with 4K 60 fps (HDR) or 4K with 100 fps, subject tracking focus and D-Log recording, ultra-wide panorama photos
- New Infinity Gimbal with 360° horizontal rotation also enables vertical shots for portrait videos and upward shots up to 70°
- Obstacle detection: omnidirectional (front/left/right/rear/bottom/top) using 6 low-light camera sensors also works at night with only 0.1 lux brightness in all directions, and thanks to LiDAR also with less than 0.1 lux in the direction of flight at the front
- maximum flight altitude at takeoff: 6,000 meters
- 10-bit HDR video transmission via O4+ with ranges of 30 km (FCC) or 15 km (CE)
- 51 minutes flight time thanks to 6,654 mAh / 95.3 Wh battery
- maximum speed of up to 90 km/h
- Weight of 1,063 grams (Mavic 3 Pro Cine: 963 g)
- Creator Combo with 240W charger, screw-on stepless electronic ND filter with ND up to ND64 and new 7" remote control

Disappointments - what&s missing? No more ProRes recording

Some users are also disappointed with the new Mavic 4 Pro, because some expected features or upgrades are not on board. For example, the image sensors of the two wider-angle camera systems are not larger than the previous model, but the (photo) resolution has been greatly increased: The 28 mm Hasselblad main camera now has an effective resolution of 100 megapixels instead of the previous 20 MP thanks to the combination of several images via computational imaging, and the maximum video resolution has been increased from 5.5K to 6K.

In addition, there will be no Cine version of the Mavic 4 Pro and therefore no more possibility to record in Apple ProRes.
If the information of the well-known leaker (OsitaLV) is correct, then the maximum video bit rate when recording 6K 10bit YCbCr 4:2:2 Log is only 1,248 Mbps (the Mavic 3 Pro Cine had ProRes 422 (LT/HQ) video with up to 3,772 Mbps).

The DJI RC Track, which would have been the first Beacon controller from DJI and of which even pictures were circulating, has also been cancelled. Its functionality is now to be integrated into the new RC Pro 2 Controller and will enable the drone to follow the user directly via tracking - even at high speeds.

Price and release date

The European prices are also already known thanks to the leaker (Hakasushi): The DJI Mavic 4 Pro (with 64 GB of storage, DJI RC2 Controller and one battery) will cost 2,189 euros, the DJI Mavic 4 Pro Fly More Combo (with 64 GB of storage, two batteries, 100W charger and the DJI RC2) will cost 2,899 euros and the DJI Mavic 4 Pro Creator Combo (with 512 GB of storage, two batteries, eND filter, 245W charger and the new DJI RC Pro 2 Controller) will cost 3,849 euros. The electronic ND filter can be purchased for an extra 220 dollars. The official presentation will take place on May 13th, so a teaser should appear on DJI&s page in the next few days.
