Developed with Hasselblad: OPPO Find X9 Ultra 8K camera smartphone features 10x periscope zoom, 3D LUTs, and ACES

While new cameras were largely absent from the NAB broadcast trade show, a smartphone was unveiled in China that is actually more of a smart camera with phone capabilities—and is clearly marketed as such. The OPPO Find X9 Ultra features a quad-camera system developed with Hasselblad, including two periscope telephoto lenses, capable of filming in 8K at 30fps in 10-bit Log. An ACES-certified color pipeline is reportedly implemented, and custom 3D LUTs can be imported. Oppo claims a dynamic range of 15 stops for the camera phone.

The Camera Section
The new Hasselblad Master Camera System comprises 4 rear camera modules as well as a "True Color Camera" (as seen on the Find X9 Pro). However, this is not an actual camera, but essentially a spectral sensor responsible for capturing precise color information for white balance ("24 spectral channels"). Additionally, according to the specifications, an extra monochrome module is on board, which in turn can capture brightness more accurately. This additional information is then evidently merged with the footage from the classic camera modules by the LUMO Image Engine.
Among the camera modules, the 50MP 10x Ultra-Sensing Optical-Zoom telephoto lens with an f/3.5 aperture represents a particular innovation. For the 10x optical periscope zoom, the light path is directed and extended via five mirror prisms (Quintuple Prism Reflection Periscope Structure), enabling a compact design. Stray light is said to be almost completely reduced, and it even appears to include effective sensor-shift image stabilization. It utilizes a customized 50MP 1/2.75" type sensor.
The system is complemented by two high-resolution 200MP "Ultra-Sensing" cameras. The 200MP main camera is based on the Sony LYTIA 901 sensor in a 1/1.12-inch format and operates with an f/1.5 aperture. There is also a 200MP 3x telephoto camera with a 1/1.28-inch sensor and f/2.2 aperture. It is specifically designed for low-light shooting and can also be used for macro shots with a minimum focus distance of 15 centimeters. The fourth module is a 50MP ultra-wide-angle camera (1/1.95"), which is said to capture 56 percent more light compared to the predecessor model.
An optionally available OPPO Hasselblad 300mm Explorer teleconverter can be attached to the Oppo Find X9 Ultra in conjunction with a special case.
New O-Log2, 4K HDR Motion Photos, and More
In the video department, a maximum resolution of 8K at 30p is supported, while 4K slow-motion at up to 120p is possible. The new O-Log2 is intended to offer a higher dynamic range and a wider color gamut (ACES-certified).
A "Hasselblad Tonality" feature is designed to produce typical colors and tonal values at the touch of a button. Cine-LUTs are supported; it appears three presets are on board, and custom Cube-LUTs can be imported.
For photos, there is, among other things, a new Hasselblad Master Mode with "more subtle image processing," nine image styles inspired by analog film, and 4K HDR Motion Photos. The user interface is also said to be modeled after Hasselblad cameras like the XPan.
Many of the functions fall into the field of computational photography/videography and are based on the LUMO Image Engine, which, according to Oppo, integrates state-of-the-art optics, color science, sensor data, and digital data processing into a seamless system. For the feature referred to as the True-Color camera, for example, hardware-based color temperature detection is combined with multimodal calculations. Multiple temperature values in an image are evaluated and taken into account, allowing image areas to be treated differently according to their specific lighting conditions.
The equipment of the Oppo Find X9 Ultra further includes a 144Hz 2K ProXDR display, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, the OPPO Trinity Engine, and a 7050mAh battery. It runs on ColorOS 16.
Price and Availability
The OPPO Find X9 Ultra is available immediately in Tundra Umber and Canyon Orange at an MSRP of 1,699 EUR (12GB + 512GB). This includes a three-month Google AI Pro subscription for extended access to Google Gemini app features, as well as 5 TB of cloud storage.
