Finally cheaper graphics cards soon? Nvidia RTX 3050 gives hope...

[15:47 Mon,14.February 2022   by Rudi Schmidts]

Contrary to some hopes, the crypto market has still not collapsed, which is why it is still possible to make money by computing on fast graphics cards in many countries with low power prices. However, GPU chip manufacturers AMD and Nvidia have recently started to intervene more directly in the market by increasingly launching "small" gamer graphics cards, which are basically ill-suited for cryptomining.

This brings additional money into the coffers, because especially small chips are used here, which are currently selling well among gamers at unusually lucrative prices. The market for mid-range cards remains extremely expensive - even though the last few days have once again indicated a slight easing.

A good indication that Nvidia is interested in some market relaxation is explained by Igor Wallossek on his site Igors Lab. Nvidia is currently positioning itself with a second version of its RTX 3050. Probably mainly to ensure a broader availability. Or simply because AMD is actually celebrating success with its "slimming strategy" and thus seriously endangers Nvidia's market share with gamers.

RTX

The "new", old RTX3050 is definitely better equipped with 8GB (128 bit) and a PCIe x8 interface than the already relatively well available AMD RX6500. However, the Nvidia entry-level model also costs almost twice as much as the AMD solution (about 410 Euros vs. 250 Euros) in the open market. The RRP of the RTX 3050 is 279 Euros, mind you.

So far, the RTX 3050 is only based on partially enabled or neutered GA106-150 chips (presumably due to yield issues), which are also used in the RTX 3060. However, according to Igor, cards with GA107 chips will also ship soon, which will draw less power with similar specs (115 vs. 130W TBP). This should then also increase the overclocking/undervolting potential.

However, the really good news is that a wide availability of such entry-level cards should also affect the mid-range in the medium term. After all, if many gamers now turn to these available entry-level cards, some price pressure should ease from the mid-range. This trend even seems to be indicated in the current market figures. For a sustainable easing of the market, however, there would still have to be a strong drop in crypto prices...
