Firmware 5.00: Sony VENICE 2 gets new signature look and 12G-SDI in 4K 47.95p

As announced, Sony has released firmware update 5.00 for its 8K cine camera, the VENICE 2. Eleven months after version 4.00, the update primarily introduces a new preset look for on-set monitoring as well as an additional 12G-SDI output format.

"Signature" - new look for monitoring

The most interesting new feature is the so-called "Signature" preset look, which is available as an additional LUT option for monitoring. According to Sony, it offers natural color reproduction, consistent skin tones, and smooth tonal transitions from shadows to highlights. The Signature look does not replace the established s709, but is available as an alternative. Whether Signature leans more towards modern, lower-contrast grading aesthetics in practice remains to be seen—initial comparisons with s709 are likely to appear soon.

12G-SDI with 4K at 47.95 fps and CNA-2 as a LAN adapter

On the connectivity side, 4096 x 2160p has been added as a new output format via 12G-SDI—though exclusively at a project frame rate of 47.95 fps. This allows compatible devices to be connected via a single link instead of multiple SDI cables, which simplifies rigging, especially for high-frame-rate projects. Furthermore, thanks to the new firmware, the CNA-2 Camera Control Network Adaptor can now also be used as a LAN conversion adapter, which is practical for remote and multicam setups.

In addition, there are two minor improvements: the "Out of Range" indicator for the moiré alert in in-camera VFX mode (keyword: volume productions) is now easier to read, and the digital bubble gauge marker has been made brighter.

Note the update path

Important before installation: V5.00 strictly requires version 4.10. Cameras with V4.00 must therefore first be updated to 4.10; for V3.00 or older, the detour via V3.9x is necessary first. Update instructions and release notes are included with the approximately 822 MB download—as usual, installation is at your own risk.

The firmware is now available for free download on the[Sony support pages](www.sony.de/electronics/support/professional-cameras-digital-cinema-cameras/mpc-3626/software/00376811). Sony explicitly recommends installation for all VENICE 2 systems. Sony has also provided an outlook on further updates: version 6.00 is announced for 2027—however, nothing is known yet about its content or exact date.
