Blackmagic Design is expanding its UltraStudio line of compact video capture and playback boxes with two new affordable solutions compatible with Mac, Windows, and Linux computers featuring USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 ports: the UltraStudio Express Monitor 3G for playback via 3G-SDI and HDMI, and the UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G for recording 3G-SDI and HDMI signals.

One device, one task

Unlike the larger UltraStudio models, which usually combine input and output, Blackmagic separates the functionality: the UltraStudio Express Recorder 3G is a dedicated capture device for live streaming setups with OBS or for digitizing older broadcast sources, while the UltraStudio Express Monitor 3G is used for image monitoring from editing software such as DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Media Composer, or Adobe Premiere Pro.

UltraStudio Express 3G

Both models feature 3G-SDI and HDMI interfaces and support all SD and HD standards up to 1080p/60 in 10-bit 4:2:2 or 4:4:4. The key innovation compared to the previous UltraStudio Monitor/Recorder 3G boxes is the upgrade from their Thunderbolt 3 port to USB4. Thanks to this standard, which is now also installed in many Windows and Linux laptops without Thunderbolt certification, the compatibility of the boxes is greatly expanded, allowing them to be used with many more platforms than before. Conveniently, video recording, playback, and power supply are handled via a single USB cable, meaning the boxes can even be powered by a laptop battery. UltraStudio Express 3G models use the DeckLink API, ensuring support for almost all video software.

UltraStudio Express 3G Monitor

Both UltraStudio Express models work with Fusion, the visual effects software integrated into DaVinci Resolve, as well as with Adobe After Effects and Photoshop. Blackmagic&s Media Express software is included, enabling video capture and playback.
