Zeiss introduced the Otus ML 1.4/35mm at the CP+ photo fair in Japan this week – the manual wide-angle lens expands the Otus ML series to a trio; the 1.4/50 and 1.4/85 focal lengths are already available. According to Zeiss, the new 1.4/35mm is particularly intended for street and travel photography as well as documentaries – due to the shallow depth of field, it is suitable for "photographic storytelling" where gazes are to be directed, but video-affine features such as an optionally de-clickable aperture are also included.

ZEISS Otus ML 1.4/35
With the ML generation of the Otus line, Zeiss brings its optical expertise and mechanical precision to modern mirrorless full-frame systems with Sony E, Canon RF, and Nikon Z mounts. Natural color reproduction, exceptional sharpness, and high micro-contrast are due to the elaborate aspherical design (containing 15 elements in 11 groups), which minimizes distortion and chromatic aberrations. In combination with the anti-reflective ZEISS T* coating, reflections and flares are reduced, further improving both contrast and color accuracy.
The ZEISS Otus ML 1.4/35 is designed to offer millimeter-precise focusing control. It features a smooth metal focus ring with a helicoid mechanism and a precisely calibrated rotation angle for particularly exact focusing. The close focus distance is 0.3m, and the focus rotation angle is 257°.
A de-clickable aperture allows for stepless transitions; using an adjustment screw on the bayonet mount, the locking mechanism can be released with the supplied tool, allowing the aperture to be adjusted steplessly and silently.
The all-metal housing is intended to ensure high robustness and a premium feel. The weight of the lens is between 698 and 737g depending on the mount.
