For sports events: ARRI ALEXA 35 Live - Up to 8x super slow motion via SDI for live productions

[16:50 Tue,7.July 2026 by Thomas Richter]

ARRI expands its multicam system with the ALEXA 35 Live Xtreme – a broadcast camera that feeds high-frame-rate signals of up to 8x in HD or 2x in UHD directly via SDI into classic baseband workflows. Super slow-motion replays in the ARRI look, which are particularly interesting for sports events, are intended to be possible without an additional high-speed camera – the slow motion comes from the same camera as the program feed, with the same color science.

Technically, the Live Xtreme is easily recognizable as a fusion of two existing models: it combines the hardware of the ALEXA 35 Xtreme (introduced in July 2025, with a new processor board and up to 660 fps internally) with the fiber-based multicam concept of the ALEXA 35 Live, which launched in April 2024. The latter was still limited to 0.75–60 fps in ProRes – the new Xtreme variant now significantly raises this limit for live use. Like its predecessor, it features a 4.6K Super 35 sensor with 17 stops of dynamic range, which is connected to production networks via the LPS-1 Fiber Camera Adapter and the Fiber Base Station.

The ARRI ALEXA 35 Live Xtreme comes with a pre-installed high-speed and new HFR-SDI license. The HFR signal runs as baseband directly into common slow-motion servers such as EVS or SimplyLive; up to 4x fits through a single SDI output, while higher speeds are split across both SDI outputs. In parallel, the camera always provides a live feed for the program, and it is possible to switch between the program frame rate and HFR in real time. A phase-blending feature is intended to provide full control over motion blur and shutter characteristics in the live image. However, there is a limitation regarding frame rates and dynamic range: the full 17 stops are maintained up to 330 fps; in sensor overdrive mode, up to 480 fps are possible, though with only 11 stops of dynamic range.

The upgrade path points to the underlying hardware of the Live Xtreme: ALEXA 35 Live cameras manufactured from 2026 onwards can be equipped with Xtreme functionality temporarily or permanently simply by purchasing a license in the ARRI online shop – a clear indication that the current live hardware already contains the Xtreme processor board. Older ALEXA 35 Live models, on the other hand, require a hardware upgrade at a service center – ALEXA 35 Cine cameras can also continue to be retrofitted for multicam broadcast.

The main argument in favor of this system over dedicated super slow-motion system cameras, in addition to eliminating the need for an otherwise additional camera, is the consistent look across both live images and slow-motion shots – including the ARRI Look Library and custom LUTs. The Super 35 sensor also provides the significantly shallower depth of field that defines the "cinematic" live look. The ALEXA 35 Live Xtreme is available to order now; the entry system, consisting of the ARRI ALEXA 35 Live Xtreme camera with the Live Production System LPS-1 (Fiber Camera Adapter and Fiber Base Station), costs 119,000 euros, with shipping starting in the third quarter.
