Samsung has presented four new Generation 10 smartphones. The smallest Galaxy S10e ("e" stands for essential) has a 5.8 inch OLED screen in Full HD Plus resolution (2,280 x 1,080 pixels). The "normal" Galaxy S10 with its 6.1 inch display (3,040 x 1,440 pixels) is slightly larger. Even bigger is the Galaxy S10+, which offers the same 3K resolution with 6.4 inches.
Only in the smallest e-model are the screen edges flat and not bent, which we actually prefer. We can't see any practical use in curved screen edges.
The three new 10-er smartphones without the later appearing 5G model are based on Samsung's new SoC Exynos 9820, which has a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for accelerated AI applications. The models differ primarily in terms of memory, cameras and fingerprint sensor (which we won't go into further here).
Samsung is proud of the front camera(s) embedded directly into the display, which is marketed as Infinity-O-Display. The Galaxy S10e and the Galaxy S10 "only" come with one front camera each (10 megapixels), the Galaxy S10+ even has two sensors with 8 and 10 megapixels. With the main cameras, the wheat separates from the chaff: The Galaxy S10e has only "essential" 2 sensors (12/16 Mpix). The normal S10 and the S10+ have three cameras on the back (12/12/16 Mpix). With the Galaxy S10 5G, a 5G capable model that Samsung wants to introduce in summer at the earliest, there is an additional time-of-flight camera (ToF) with which depth information can be captured very accurately. Here, too, only a table provides some overview:
Some of the main cameras have a dual aperture. All models can record videos in 4K with 60 fps, also with optical stabilization. Videos can also be recorded with HDR10+ support. The NPU is designed to help optimize scenes.
The Galaxy S10+ (4,100 mAh) with 8 GB RAM and 512 GB flash memory is quite a memory monster. Optionally, it is also available with 12 GB RAM and 1 TByte flash memory. The Galaxy S10e (3,100 mAh) has 6 GB RAM and 128 GB flash memory. The Galaxy S10 (3,400 mAh) comes with 8 GB RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB Flash. The G5 model (4,500 mAh) can be purchased either with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB flash memory or with 12 GB RAM and 512 GB flash memory. All devices have a slot for memory cards and are 7.8 to 7.9mm thin.
The Galaxy S10 (from 900 Euro), the 10e (750 Euro) and the 10+ (from 1250 Euro) will be available from 8 March 2019. The Galaxy 10+ in the top equipment (12GB/1TB) will cost 1600 euro. The 5G models will come first in summer and then probably as a contract package in interaction with the 5G providers.
