Free camera app: Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.4 brings improved remote control and new features

Just after Blackmagic released version 3.4 of the Android version of its professional, free pro camera app, an update for the iPhone/iPad follows now as well. Blackmagic Camera for iOS 3.4 primarily brings improvements for remote workflows, expands Apple Watch integration, and closes several gaps that had become apparent in practice.

Apple Watch gets a complication

Already in

the previous version 3.3, Blackmagic introduced a companion app for the Apple Watch, allowing users to start and stop recordings, adjust exposure, focus, and LUTs, as well as switch between lenses. In version 3.4, Blackmagic is stepping it up: additional camera control options are being added, and for the first time, there is an Apple Watch complication for quick app access directly from the watch face.

Remote control via REST API

Another new feature is particularly interesting for professional workflows: starting immediately, the Blackmagic Camera REST API is supported in the iOS version. This allows the app to be addressed and controlled programmatically from other software, which is useful, for example, for broadcast setups, automated workflows, or proprietary control systems on set. Additionally, the Remote Camera Manager has been added, which was already introduced in the Android version.

Proxy management and livestream improvements

Also new is a dedicated Proxy Clip Manager for viewing and managing proxy footage, including the option to automatically delete proxies when the original media is deleted. For livestream users, the app now separates router and destination selection into distinct settings areas, which is handy when switching between different platforms or routers.

And bug fixes

The new version also brings a number of bug fixes, such as a corrected front camera display on iPhone 17 models, resolved peak indicator issues in the extended histogram, fixes for the off-speed control area in remote workflows, and corrections for inverted stereo audio channels.
