Generative TV: Showrunner AI creates complete South Park episodes

[15:34 Fri,21.July 2023   by blip]

Currently, both screenwriters and actors are on strike in Hollywood because the advent of streaming services has made it difficult for many of them to make a living - the old compensation model has not been updated to reflect the new circumstances. Now, as we know, another technological upheaval is on the horizon with generative AIs, which could mean that there will no longer even be low-paying work for many filmmakers, as AIs will simply perform many of their tasks for free.

A new AI model called SHOW-1 fablestudio.github.io/showrunner-agents/ has just been (presented), which is quasi-autonomously capable of creating new episodes of TV series, for example South Park (see below). Starting from a title and a prompt that outlines the plot and some specific plot points that should occur, the showrunner model takes care of the rest, i.e. it defines the scenes needed, which characters should appear in each case, which dialogues should be spoken and how the plot develops.

SHOW-1 uses an underlying multi-agent simulation, which includes context and character biographies - the world in which the characters move, their previous experiences and feelings. Based on these data points, the system sends chained prompts to the GPT-4 language model, which generates a script from them. This script is then automatically converted into animated images via stable diffusion and, of course, set to music.

The new system is demonstrated with some South Park episodes generated by SHOW-1, which are impressive and boring at the same time. This is because the plot is coherent and consistent and also does the character roles some justice. However, you have to look for an entertainment value with a magnifying glass - the whole thing ultimately seems like what it is, namely a simple sequence of situations, moreover without any significant pep or wit in the dialogues. Visually, of course, this rather crude animated series doesn&t present much of a hurdle (which is probably why it was chosen).

SHOW-1 was developed by a startup called Fable, which already offers a kind of virtual universe populated by AI-based NFT characters with The Simulation. Unlike other games, these AI characters are continuously moving around in their world, not just when you are logged in yourself. Additional (or different) marketing channels are now apparently being sought for this simulation.

Accordingly, the SHOW-1 model presented is initially intended to give fans of existing series the opportunity to generate their own episodes. This is to happen in cooperation with the respective copyright owners, who are to strengthen their brand and audience loyalty - fans are even to be able to appear as characters in the created episodes. The result is a "rich, interactive, and engaging storytelling experience that is consistently aligned with the IP story world. If these new episodes created by users + AI were to flow into the model via a feedback loop, series could be steered in completely new directions.

At the moment, however, it is not yet possible (due to lack of rights) to generate own episodes, neither of South Park, nor of any other series. However, according to the Fable CEO, they want to present three of their own simulations with associated AI-generated TV series later this year. In perspective, it would also be conceivable that human-made TV series would simply be taken over by a showrunner AI after 3 seasons, which could then create an infinite number of further episodes.

As I said, the South Park episodes shown are not artistically convincing, but it is probably no coincidence that the showrunner model is being presented now of all times during the strikes mentioned at the beginning. The idea that the rebellious creative employees could be largely replaced with an AI that simulates creative thinking is probably attractive to many a Hollywood studio. I wonder if audience taste has already eroded to such an extent that no one would notice the poor quality and arbitrariness? We are relatively sure that someone will be found to try it out, sooner rather than later.
