The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards are entering their fifth round: Filmmakers worldwide can now submit their short films free of charge for the 2027 edition; the submission deadline is December 15, 2026. New this time are an Immersive category, presented by Meta, and the Snapdragon Shorts Award from Qualcomm – and a fixed date has already been set for the finalists& meeting in Los Angeles. 
Four days on the Sony Pictures lot: The program in detailThe core of the competition remains the industry program: The creators of the 34 shortlisted films will be flown to Los Angeles – flights and accommodation are covered by the organizer. The four-day program will take place from June 7 to 10, 2027, on the Sony Pictures studio lot in Culver City and will conclude with a gala ceremony on June 10, 2027. In terms of content, the event goes well beyond mere networking: Led by Sony Pictures executives, the sessions will illuminate key facets of the industry – from production, talent contract negotiations, and the studio&s film acquisition process to working with publicists, technology demonstrations, animation techniques, and film scoring. This is complemented by camera masterclasses, Q&As with talent agencies, casting directors, and production managers, as well as curated screenings and studio tours. The program is aimed at directors, DPs, and producers.  The categories at a glanceSubmissions are accepted in a total of six categories: Fiction and Non-Fiction each require films between 5 and 20 minutes in length; the winner will be chosen from a shortlist of ten filmmakers in each category and will receive ,000 (approx. €4,300) plus Sony digital imaging equipment. Animation is open to all techniques, from stop-motion and motion graphics to computer animation and rotoscoping, with a length of 2 to 20 minutes – a shortlist of five, also receiving ,000 plus equipment. The Student category is aimed at enrolled film students worldwide (5–20 minutes, all genres); here, winners and their educational institutions each receive Sony equipment, with the shortlisted institutions selected by continent. Of interest to smartphone filmmakers: The Future Format category – as in 2026 – calls for vertically shot shorts (9:16), between 2 and 5 minutes long, with no restrictions on genre or recording device. The winner receives ,500, Sony equipment, and an invitation to L.A. Newly added is the Immersive category, presented by Meta. Prizes here include a Meta VR headset, among others.  Snapdragon Shorts Award: Mobile filmmaking as a marketing showcaseAlso new: Five filmmakers selected from the shortlist will receive Snapdragon-based devices, including a smartphone and laptop, to produce an original short film. The winner will be awarded a trip to Hawaii for the premiere at the Snapdragon Summit. Qualcomm is thus joining the trend established by Apple&s "Shot on iPhone" campaigns of using mobile filmmaking as a showcase for their own hardware.
