Apple continues its shopping spree – in addition to MotionVFX, the web-based grading tool Color.io, or more precisely the development studio behind it (Patchflyer), has also been acquired. Jonathan Ochmann, who drove Color.io forward single-handedly for years, is now working for Apple. It is expected that he will incorporate his color grading expertise into the new Apple Creator Studio as well as the standalone versions of Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Pixelmator Pro. ![]() Color.io with Color Refraction Wheels The acquisition took place back in January but only recently became public. Shortly before that, in December 2025, Color.io was discontinued. At the time, it was stated that further development within that solo framework was too demanding and that Ochmann was moving to a company that would allow him to work on a completely different scale—no surprise, as that company is none other than Apple. Color.io was a color grading app for photo and film that allowed users to create and export their own 3D LUTs; it also included numerous film simulations for quick looks. Using AI Color Match, colors (as well as brightness and contrast) could be quickly transferred to other footage based on one&s own reference images. According to the developer, this was based on an analog grading engine designed for natural, film-like processing of colors and textures within an extremely wide, logarithmically encoded color space. It will be interesting to see what changes in the areas of grading and color correction will come to Apple&s creative software in the future. deutsche Version dieser Seite: Erweiteres Grading fürs Creator Studio?
