Hello Action-CineCam?: GoPro promises camera(s) with larger sensors for NAB

GoPro recently announced its new GP3 image processor with integrated NPU. It is set to be installed in the next generation of cameras, giving them a noticeable boost in recording performance. Interestingly, there was also mention of a new type of camera for GoPro: a compact "cinema-grade" camera.

Now, the manufacturer has confirmed that it will present several new cameras at the upcoming NAB, tailored to professional content creators. In doing so, they reiterated the advantages of the new GP3 processor, which is expected to bring improvements in image quality and low-light performance, as well as enabling higher resolutions and frame rates.

However, one additional feature of the new cameras stands out, which had not been mentioned previously: "larger sensors."

The new GP3-based GoPro cameras are more professionally oriented than ever before: they offer more than double the image processing power, larger sensors, advanced features, and market-leading performance in low light, resolution, and frame rates—all in compact, rugged housings that ensure industry-leading runtimes and thermal performance under the most diverse environmental conditions.

Another teaser video has also been released, which is said to show footage from the new GoPro cameras:

Most of this does not look like action cam footage, if only because of the angle of view. Of course, the long-awaited, classic Hero 14 Black could still be released at NAB—but it seems it will be in tandem with one or more cameras that lean towards the action-cinecam category. It will be interesting to see which path GoPro takes regarding lens selection, for example. Likewise, it remains to be seen how large the "larger" sensors will be—many open questions, then, but also a lot of potential.
