High-Speed Storage for Professionals: Magnetic Mini-SSDs with 8TB and up to 3,700 MB/s for Smartphone Filmmakers

ShiftCam, the specialist in smartphone accessories for filmmakers, has just unveiled its new Planck Essential SSD and Planck Studio SSD models at CES 2026. The latter is an extremely fast mini SSD that can provide a smartphone with up to 8 TB of additional storage space, for example, for recording films. Data can be transferred via USB-C at read and write speeds of up to 3,700 MB/s via USB 4.

Furthermore, the Planck Studio SSD has an integrated display that shows the name of the transferred files, the current speed, and the remaining storage space. Another special feature: should the Planck Studio SSD be lost, it can be located thanks to its integration with Apple&s and Google&s device tracking networks ("Find My?"). Conveniently, the Planck Studio SSD can be magnetically attached to the back of the smartphone, requiring no extra mounting.

The Planck Studio SSD comes in two variants – a 4TB model for around and an 8TB model for around . Specifically for smartphone filmmakers, it offers a lot of fast storage space that—especially with the iPhone—would otherwise be many times more expensive: for instance, an upgrade from 256 GB to 512 GB on the iPhone 17 Pro costs a hefty 250 Euros. Thus, the Planck SSD can be used as a recording medium, for example, in the free professional camera app Blackmagic Camera. The Planck Studio SSD is compatible with all Android phones and iPhones with a USB-C port (i.e., all models from the iPhone 15 onwards).

Planck Essential SSD
For users who don&t need quite as much storage space or want to spend as much money but still need extra space, ShiftCam has introduced the new Planck Essential SSDs. They are similar in form factor to the original Planck SSD (though significantly smaller now), which has been renamed the Planck Creator SSD and is available in capacities of 1 and 2 TB.

The new Planck Essential SSDs now form the new entry-level model series and offer 246 or 512 GB of external USB-C SSD storage for smartphones at a current price of around 69 or 87 Euros, respectively. However, their read and write speed is only around 300 MB/s. They weigh only 5 grams and are so small that they can simply be attached to the smartphone&s USB-C port using their connector, adding only 6mm to the length. They are also compatible with all Android phones and iPhones with a USB-C port (i.e., all models from the iPhone 15 onwards).

Planck Essential SSDs are available immediately; the Planck Studio SSD models will be available starting in March 2026.
