Insta360 is expanding its product range with a new 8K/360° camera. Weighing 165g, the X4 Air is lighter than previously available models, while maintaining a similar form factor. Based on its model designation and price, the X4 Air appears to be positioned below the X4, yet it features new and slightly larger image sensors.
Insta360 X4 Air
It is equipped with two 1/1.8" sensors (the X4 uses 1/2" sensors), which, according to the manufacturer, benefits the sharpness of the 8K footage. The two fisheye lenses capture every angle during 360° recording; the footage can then be reframed more tightly later in the Insta360 App to create classic shot compositions. The maximum resolution in 360° is 7680x3840 at 30/25/24fps, and 6K at 50p can be set.
The InstaFrame mode optionally records a shareable flat video and a full 360° version simultaneously. Alternatively, filming can be done with just one camera module, at a maximum of 4K with 30p.
New software features are designed to lead to better images, such as AdaptiveTone, an "intelligent" exposure algorithm. It analyzes the light from both lenses individually to balance brightness and color across the entire 360° image. This aims to preserve details in the sky and shadows without extensive color correction.
In parallel, Active HDR, now available at up to 8K 30 fps, is designed to improve dynamic range in real-time for lifelike highlights and shadows, even in challenging lighting conditions. A portrait mode automatically detects faces and adjusts brightness and color to achieve soft, natural skin tones without extensive editing. In low light, improved algorithms and noise reduction are intended to ensure that recordings remain clear and detailed.
As with the current top model X5, the X4 Air&s lenses are interchangeable; they are also equipped with an ultra-hard optical coating that is said to be twice as drop-resistant as the X4. An optional lens guard offers additional protection without glare. The new X4 Air is waterproof up to a depth of 15 meters (X4: 10m) and features Insta360&s FlowState stabilization and 360° Horizon Lock.
With the "Twist to Shoot" mode, recording can be started or stopped simply by twisting the selfie stick. Gesture control recognizes quick hand signals for taking photos or videos, and voice control allows for hands-free camera operation.
The X4 Air seamlessly connects with brands like Apple, Garmin, and HUAWEI, then synchronizes location, motion, and performance data directly with the videos.
**Price and Availability** The Insta360 X4 Air is available immediately and costs 329 Euros in the standard bundle. The Starter Bundle, which includes a 114 cm Invisible Selfie Stick, a lens cap, and an additional battery, costs 399 Euros.
