Instead of cloud collaboration: Strada Connect aims to enable remote video editing via peer-to-peer

Strada Connect is the name of a newly available system that aims to revolutionize remote editing through an interesting mix of new and old technology. It intends to replace the cumbersome—and sometimes expensive—process of using the cloud with direct asset sharing via peer-to-peer transfer. While the video data remains on local storage devices, Strada provides a secure and constant connection architecture, allowing videos to be edited smoothly on a timeline without transferring them to remote computers—regardless of the editing software being used.
To achieve this, a "Strada Agent" software, which was introduced last year, must first be installed. Once installed, any hard drive can be mounted via the Agent dashboard and connected to the Strada network. A Strada web application then allows for the sharing of folders with team members, typical of peer-to-peer systems. Access rights can be set individually for each invitation, allowing files to be shared securely with anyone in the world. When external editors integrate Strada on their desktops, they see the drives shared with them and, thanks to the new Connect functionality, can simply drag and drop files directly into their preferred creative programs.
Once there, they should be relatively smooth to edit, though this depends on file sizes and the internet connection. Ideally, proxy files are used, a detail largely omitted on the Strada website. To what extent the agent connection optimizes access to frame sequences to prevent lag during editing is also not communicated. It appears that, for now, Connect only works on Mac systems (even though the "Agents" can also be installed on Windows).
Via Strada, media files can be shared without incurring storage fees like those associated with common cloud applications; the data remains on your own hardware. It does not need to be uploaded to servers that are outside of your own control. However, a disadvantage compared to cloud hosting is that the data is only available to others when the host computer is turned on and the Strada Agent tool is running.
Instead of cloud fees, Strada requires payment as a subscription service—the Strada Connect functionality for P2P editing is offered starting at per month per user ( with annual billing). You can test Strada for free for seven days.
Incidentally, the team behind Strada is not unknown—Michael Cioni previously founded the cloud-based collaboration tool Frame.io and later sold it to Adobe. Collaboration features such as comments and the like are also planned for Strada.
