Intel CPUs 2025: Minimal performance leap, but affordable platform

[14:22 Tue,7.January 2025   by Rudi Schmidts]

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), AMD, Intel, and Nvidia regularly showcase their latest consumer IT products for the upcoming year. These usually include mobile and desktop CPUs and GPUs, generally available within the next few weeks and months.

Intel's presentation showed one thing above all: AMD has become more than just a serious competitor. The CPU performance crown seems lost for Intel, at least for now, and in GPUs, they can only serve the lowest mid-range. However, AMD will likely have to put considerable pressure on prices here, as Nvidia suddenly offers an RTX 4070 with 12 GB but 672 GB/s at a fighting price of .

And Intel should finally take another point of criticism to heart: The product portfolio of the new CPU series for 2025 is once again extremely confusing, so that potential buyers almost inevitably need additional advice. The following figure exemplifies this:

However, AMD must also accept this accusation, as the following rant from Linus Tech Tips nicely summarizes:

Basically, many product names from AMD and Intel are no longer meaningfully assignable to technical performance. This ultimately creates uncertainty and tends to scare away potential buyers.

But even this jungle of versions cannot conceal the fact that the new generation does not hide a significant performance leap at Intel. It is "only" minimally adapted variants based on last year's Raptor Lake chip, which was already a "refresh" at the time. This is also indirectly confirmed by an image of Intel's new Bartlett Lake-S, which features the already well-known layout.

Therefore, what's new this year are mainly plus or minus 200 MHz or minor other TDP adjustments. But that doesn't necessarily have to be seen negatively. Because of the tense competitive situation, Intel currently offers a significantly cheaper freely configurable PC platform with DDR-5 and PCIe 5.0 than the competition. And Intel processors have also always had better hardware decoding for video editors.

Seen in this way, Intel will probably be more concerned with itself in the next few quarters than with fighting AMD for the CPU performance crown. And it is currently not expected that ARM will appear in the future with PCIe/DDR5 mainboards under Windows.
