The new AI algorithm "Liveportrait" by a Chinese research team is currently making the rounds on social media, as it enables the animation of images and videos of faces based on a video recording of a face. Thankfully, the researchers have not only published a ![]() LivePortrait transfers both facial expressions, including eye and eyebrow movements, as well as slight head movements and lip movements - the latter being extremely useful for the realistic animation of speaking faces. Especially in combination with AI-generated images and videos, LivePortrait offers filmmakers completely new and long-desired possibilities of control: using their own input video, facial expressions in an image or video can be controlled with precision. These animated faces give AI videos a much more realistic appearance than before. Interestingly, animal faces can also be animated with its help. ![]() The algorithm was developed by researchers from the Chinese Kuaishou corporation, which recently released its attention-grabbing ![]() The researchers provide several practical tips for using your own control videos. These should have an aspect ratio of 1:1 (e.g., 512x512 or 256x256 pixels), and you should enable automatic cropping with --flag_crop_driving_video. Additionally, ensure that the video mainly shows the head area and that shoulder movements are kept to a minimum. The first image should be a frontal face with a neutral expression. Various users have already produced demo clips using LivePortrait&s capabilities, including on Twitter:
