Today, Sony is expanding its Cinema Line series with the introduction of the FX5 full-frame camera. It features a newly developed, fully-stacked 5K CMOS image sensor and, according to Sony, boasts a dynamic range of over 15 stops in S-Log3 mode. The FX5 also brings several new professional features previously unseen in the FX series, such as Open Gate shooting and internal recording in X-OCN, Sony&s proprietary RAW format. An optional OLED viewfinder is also compatible with the FX5—only an ND filter is still missing. ![]() Sony FX5 with optional viewfinder We had a brief advance look at the FX5 in our editorial office—detailed information about the camera, our impressions, and test footage can be found (here in our practical test) > (The lab test will follow shortly.) More resolution, more RAW, more formats... In addition to the new full-frame Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with an effective approx. 16.6MP and stacked architecture—which is still mounted on a flexible stabilization system—the FX5 features the latest BIONZ XR2 image processor with a dedicated AI processing unit. It can shoot in 5K at up to 60 frames per second, in 4K at up to 120 fps, and in Full HD at up to 240 fps. For the first time in the FX series, the camera supports a 3:2 full-pixel readout across the entire sensor area, i.e., Open Gate shooting (though only in the X-OCN format), as well as various scan modes such as 17:9, 16:9, and Super 35mm. You read that correctly: the FX5 allows internal recording in the proprietary 16-bit RAW format X-OCN, eliminating the need for an external recorder. Alongside X-OCN LT, the camera also supports two new variants, X-OCN C1 and X-OCN C2, which enable faster transmission of high-resolution image data through reduced data rates, thereby optimizing post-production workflows. ![]() Three base ISO values—ISO 800, ISO 4000, and ISO 12800—contribute to low-noise image rendering under a wide variety of shooting conditions. Furthermore, a Dual Gain function is available (again, a first for the FX series) for an expanded dynamic range with reduced image noise. The AI-based subject recognition, already at work in other recent Sony models, uses human pose estimation technology to detect not only the position of the eyes, but also head and body movements. This allows the camera to deliver extremely precise autofocus performance even in difficult lighting conditions. Additionally, the FX5 supports Real-time Tracking, which automatically follows subjects and ensures reliable focus tracking. When using Auto Tracing White Balance (ATW), the camera combines information from visible light and infrared (IR) sensors with deep learning-based light source detection to analyze shooting situations with exceptional precision. According to Sony, this results in a more stable and natural white balance in shadow areas, indoors, and in other challenging lighting situations. The camera also features a Noise Suppression function (On/Off). Matching the Open Gate readout, a desqueeze function is integrated for anamorphic shooting. Lenses with 1.3x, 1.5x, 1.6x, 1.8x, and 2.0x squeeze factors are supported, ensuring a correct image preview. Compact with new IBIS and Big6 The camera features a housing that is similarly compact and lightweight to the FX3. Thanks to the latest stabilization unit, the IBIS correction range for roll movements has reportedly been expanded to about double that of the previous system, more effectively reducing blur caused by rotational movements. In addition to optical image stabilization and Active Mode, the camera also offers a Dynamic Active Mode, which delivers a particularly stable image look even when shooting handheld. ![]() Combined with a newly developed (optional) XLR handle, the camera supports high-quality audio recording with up to 96 kHz, 32-bit float, and four audio channels. It is also compatible with the likewise optional, tilting 0.58-inch OLED viewfinder, designed to allow precise image monitoring even in bright ambient light. The FX5 is further equipped with a 3.5-inch 16:9 touchscreen display with approximately 2.76 million dots, which is larger and brighter than the monitor on the FX3. The fully articulating and tilting display can be flipped out upwards by about 98 degrees, downwards by 40 degrees, and sideways by roughly 180 degrees. The brightness of the high-resolution panel can be adjusted in 15 steps. ![]() Shooting information can be displayed at the top, bottom, left, or right edge of the screen; the BIG6 start screen, familiar from CineAlta cameras, consolidates key settings such as frame rate, exposure, and LUTs. A new menu system also ensures consistent operation when used alongside CineAlta cameras or the FX6. Improved cooling and longer battery life The heat dissipation concept of the FX5 has been overhauled, incorporating a new, more efficient fan housed in a separate air chamber to reliably handle extended video recording sessions. The lightweight yet robust, dust- and moisture-resistant body features integrated threaded holes in various locations for direct accessory mounting. This allows for flexible setups to be realized without strictly requiring a cage. Through the integration of the Monitor & Control App, the FX5 supports video previewing and remote control via smartphones, tablets, and Mac devices. The camera&s HDMI output can display different information on the camera display and an external monitor, or output the exact same information simultaneously to both displays. The camera uses the new high-performance NP-SA100 battery (2,670 mAh), introduced with the Alpha 7R VI. With about 1.3 times the capacity of the Z-series NP-FZ100 battery, it enables exceptionally long recording times. Optimized power management also contributes to improved battery life. Furthermore, the status of the inserted battery can be checked directly within the camera. ![]() Two USB-C ports are on board. Alongside support for timecode inputs via an optional adapter cable, the FX5 also supports power delivery via USB Power Delivery (PD). An integrated LAN port enables remote control of the camera as well as stable network connections, providing the expandability required for professional production environments. Upcoming features A preview of planned firmware updates has also been provided. The following features are scheduled to be added in firmware version 2.0 (expected around August 2027): - Support for HFR shooting at up to 240 fps in X-OCN - XAVC S-I recording in 3:2 format (Open Gate) - An optimized user interface for vertical video recording - A new frame grab function Pricing and availability The ILME-FX5 including the XLR handle is available for pre-order starting today, with a recommended retail price (RRP) of 5,999 euros—shipping is scheduled to begin in August 2026. The body without the XLR handle (ILME-FX5B) will cost 5,399 euros. The XLR-H2 XLR handle will be offered separately for 899 euros. The DVF-EL1 OLED viewfinder will cost 749 euros.
