Modular Rig Setup: SmallRig HawkLock Cage System Announced for Sony FX5

Since the recently introduced Sony FX5 is minimally larger than the older FX3 and its ports and similar features are positioned slightly differently, custom-fit FX3 accessories cannot be used with the camera. SmallRig is therefore releasing a line of specially adapted, modular HawkLock cages. Alongside individually available components, there will also be pre-configured kits as well as supplementary XLR handle accessories—all parts within the HawkLock ecosystem are compatible and can be expanded upon later.

The basis of all kits is a three-sided full cage that secures the FX5 on the sides and bottom using multiple 1/4″-20 screws. Integrated silicone pads are designed to protect against scratches without restricting access to ports or controls. The top cover plates can be removed to attach Sony's XLR handle (XLRH2B) or electronic viewfinder (DVF-EL1B) directly—meaning the cage does not need to be completely removed to do so.
For accessory mounting, 1/4″-20 and 3/8″-16 threads, ARRI locating holes, a NATO rail, cold shoe, and a QD socket are built-in. According to the manufacturer, the NATO rail and Arca-Swiss quick-release plate feature anti-drop stops on both sides. A dedicated HDMI cable clamp is designed to provide strain relief for the sensitive port, and a magnetic Allen wrench is stored directly inside the cage.

The Kits Compared
Cage Only (SKU 6776): The basic version provides just the cage and is aimed at users who want to assemble their rig individually anyway.
Handheld Cage Kit (SKU 6778): In addition to the cage, this includes a closed top handle, an ergonomic wrist strap, and a 15mm rod clamp. According to SmallRig, this kit is ready for handheld shooting right out of the box—useful for run-and-gun setups where you don't want to spend a lot of time rigging.
Handheld Kit with V-Mount Plate (6779): A complete solution for power supply and handheld operation, featuring a foldable V-Mount battery plate for extended runtime.
Advanced Dual Rod Kit (SKU 6924): The most comprehensive bundle adds a complete 15mm dual rod system with a rod mount plate and an Arca-Swiss plate to the handheld kit. This allows for the integration of a matte box, follow focus, V-Mount battery solutions, and lens support.
The HawkLock Cage Kit for FX5 & XLR Handle (SKU 6777) combines a handheld cage with a handle extension that adds 1/4″-20 threads, ARRI 3/8″-16 holes, and HawkLock quick-release points to the original Sony handle. An HDMI clamp and wrist strap are also included.
A more affordable Mount Plate for Sony XLR-H2/H1 (SKU 6925) is a purely protective and expansion plate for the XLR handle itself—featuring a cold shoe and threaded holes for microphones or lights, without additional cage functionality.
The separate Extension Mount Plate Kit for Sony XLR-H2 (SKU 6781) also offers a closed ring handle extension and HawkLock compatibility.
