More free tools: DaVinci Resolve 21 imports Affinity files and the 2D animation tool Cavalry becomes free

Among the many new features in Blackmagic&s DaVinci Resolve 21, one interesting addition is the native support for Affinity .af files, including group and individual layer control. This allows designs created in Affinity to be imported directly into Resolve to be used, for example, as intros, overlays, layer masks, titles, logos, speech bubbles, or similar elements.

The functionality goes beyond a simple import and is more akin to a link, as any changes made to the .af files are automatically updated in Resolve, keeping the assets in the timeline synchronized—meaning no re-importing is necessary. Individual layers can be split onto separate tracks in Resolve. The photo editing software Capture One now also natively supports Affinity files.

Cavalry now available for free

Another announcement from Canva concerns the 2D animation tool Cavalry, which can now also be used for free.
This provides users with an increasing number of interconnected, powerful tools—free of charge, as Canva has been providing the entire Affinity bundle (Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher) for free since November 2025, just as Blackmagic&s DaVinci Resolve has long been available in a free version.

Powerful free toolkit for video, graphics, and animation

This gives users access to many powerful features for free: DaVinci Resolve provides grading, editing, compositing, audio mastering, and photo editing, while Affinity offers vector graphics/illustration, image editing, and layout/desktop publishing, now including 2D animation via Cavalry—and thanks to the new integration, collaboration between the two software families is even more seamless.
