Motion Graphics Compositing: Maxon Autograph: Professional After Effects Alternative Now Free
[10:52 Thu,16.April 2026 by Rudi Schmidts]
Maxon is now making Autograph a professional tool for motion graphics and VFX/compositing available to individuals for free. With a free MyMaxon account, anyone can download the professional motion design and compositing software with no time limits and no strings attached.
When the program was first introduced by the French company Left Angle in early 2023, we wrote at slashCam: "According to its website, Autograph aims to become nothing less than the new leading application for creating digital motion content." Behind the development was Alexandre Gauthier-Foichat, the creator and lead developer of Natron, the open-source Nuke clone. From the beginning, Autograph was designed as an alternative to the established industry giants positioned somewhere between After Effects and Nuke. However, it also came with a professional license price tag.

In June 2025, there was a surprising turn of events: Maxon acquired the Autograph team from Left Angle, while Left Angle ceased operations. What many feared the quiet end of a promising tool turned out to be a fresh start under the umbrella of the Cinema 4D manufacturer. The first Maxon-branded version bears the version number 2026.0.0 and was released on April 15, 2026. And now, it is available under a completely free license for individuals.
What can Autograph do?
Autograph is designed as a hybrid software that combines elements from different worlds. Like After Effects, it works on a layer-based system with a classic timeline. Under the hood, however, the program calculates in 32-bit per channel and features comprehensive color space management more the domain of Nuke, as is its seamless 3D integration. Autograph features an integrated 3D workspace based on OpenUSD the standard for 3D data exchange developed by Pixar. This allows vector shapes and text to be extruded, compositions to be used as textures, and true multi-pass renders to be processed directly in the compositing workflow all in a single application. An integrated real-time renderer called Filament provides immediate visual feedback.

True unique selling points are the "Responsive Aspect Design" and the native Cloner. The former function allows layout elements to be positioned relative to frame dimensions a single project can thus be rendered for different output formats (16:9, 1:1, 9:16, etc.) without having to duplicate layouts. The Cloner (formerly called Instancer) enables the rapid creation of complex, iterative animations.
Thanks to full OpenFX support, third-party plugins from Boris FX, RE:Vision Effects, and others can be used. Maxon Studio is natively integrated, allowing for easy browsing and application of Red Giant effects directly within Autograph.
Also noteworthy is the extensive GPU acceleration. Compared to After Effects, Autograph is said to feel significantly more responsive.

No financial barriers to entry
With this surprising free availability, Maxon is lowering the barrier to entry for the program to zero. No 30- or 90-day trial version it is permanently free. This is reminiscent of Blackmagic's strategy with Fusion in Resolve and could certainly make similar waves. Autograph is thus positioning itself as a serious alternative to After Effects, especially for freelancers, small studios, and beginners who do not want to or cannot afford monthly subscription costs.

The system requirements are reasonable for a compositing program: at least 16 GB of RAM, Apple Silicon M1 or better on macOS, and on Windows, a GPU with at least 4 GB of VRAM (NVIDIA Maxwell or newer, or AMD RX 570/580).
Whether Autograph will actually become a "Nuke killer" or "After Effects conqueror" remains to be seen. One thing is certain: a professional compositing tool with this feature set has never been available for free before. So, anyone who has always wanted to get a taste of a powerful compositing environment or expand their workflow has little to lose but their time.
