NAB 2026: Premiere reinvents color grading – modular ball controls & AI masks

[15:05 Wed,15.April 2026   by Rudi Schmidts]

As every year at NAB, Adobe presents small and large new features in its video products. The biggest surprise is likely the new Color Mode in the Premiere Pro beta: Adobe has attempted nothing less than a complete rethinking of color grading. The look of a timeline can now be edited in a new workspace dominated by a large monitor preview.

Premiere with Color Mode
Color correction can be composed from modules that perform various adjustments, usually consisting of a combination of classic parameters. Settings are made via so-called Color Controls, which operate on two coordinates – for example, contrast and contrast midpoint. Like on an imaginary ball, these two parameters can be adjusted by moving left/right or up/down. At the same time, a mini-HUD shows the effects in relevant measurement tools (e.g., a histogram for contrast).

Using operations, color settings can be distributed across clips, groups, or entire timelines, with all affected clips shown as thumbnails on the right. Last but not least, AI object masks are also available for secondary color correction.

Furthermore, the current version 26.2 introduces new GPU-accelerated effects such as Gradient, Noise, and Channel Blur, as well as a new "Smooth Option" for AI masks, promising detailed edges. Additionally, the Sequence Index is now searchable, and clip relinking has been significantly sped up.

After Effects with AI Object Masks
AI object masks have now also arrived in After Effects, where they are said to offer even more control options than in Premiere. This feature has long been awaited because masking is used much more frequently in compositing than in editing.

Firefly now with Kling 3.0
Under Firefly, the number of usable models has now increased to over 30. For NAB 2026, Kling 3.0 and Kling 3.0 Omni are new additions – the former is said to excel at strong storyboarding and good audio sync, while the Omni variant is expected to shine with camera movements and character consistency. The Firefly online video editor has also received new features, including Enhanced Speech.

Frame.io introduces Mounted Storage
Frame.io is aiming to position itself not only for video editing but for any collaborative work, and is now presenting its own virtual "Mounted" storage system. For the user, it appears simply as an external drive on the system, but can be used simultaneously by many team members.

Used files are intelligently cached locally, so the drive feels like local storage – for example, you can start editing a shared project immediately without downloading clips first. Frame.io promises that you&ll never have to ship hard drives or wait for downloads again. All with version control and no VPN configuration.

All of the mentioned new features are available for Creative Cloud subscribers starting now, some of them still as a beta.
