Apple has introduced a range of new Macs today. Two Mac Mini series with M2 and M2 Pro. And two new MacBook Pro series with M2 Pro and M2 Max.
The Mac mini with M2 offers an 8-core CPU combined with a 10-core GPU. With up to (fixed) 24GB at 100GB/s bandwidth, memory-intensive applications run even faster. The M2 also brings ProRes acceleration to Mac mini, so special codec tasks in Final Cut Pro can be completed more than twice as fast. Even the "small" model with M2 is now said to be able to play back up to two streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 fps or up to 12 streams of 4K ProRes 422 video at 30 fps simultaneously.
The new Mac mini M2
The new M2 Pro chip brings the power of Mac Studio devices to Mac mini for the first time. With up to 12 CPU cores and up to 19-core GPU units, the Mac mini "Pro" offers doubled memory bandwidth of 200GB/s and supports up to 32GB of fixed memory.
The M2 Pro also has a "doubled" media engine that is said to be able to play up to five streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 fps or up to 23 streams of 4K ProRes 422 video at 30 fps simultaneously.
Both Mac Mini model lines offer a comprehensive selection of ports. The model with M2 has two Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports up to two displays. The M2 Pro model has four Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports up to three displays.
The new Mac mini M2
In addition, the M2 Pro model is the first desktop Mac ever to support an 8K display. Both models have two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, a Gigabit Ethernet port with option for 10GBit and an improved Ausio port that also supports high-impedance headphones.
The MacBook Pro with M2 Pro matches the performance of the new Mac Mini Pro: 10- or 12-core CPU, up to 32GB RAM with 200GB/s storage bandwidth, and up to 19 GPU cores.
MacBook Pro M2
The MacBook Pro with M2 Max takes all this to the next level - with up to 38 GPU cores, it's said to offer up to 30 per cent more graphics performance than the M1 Max. Up to 96GB of storage is connected at 400GB/s - twice as much as the M2 Pro. The maximum CPU core count is also 12 cores (eight high-performance cores and four high-efficiency cores).
According to Apple, colour correction in DaVinci Resolve should be up to 30 per cent faster than with the previous M1 Pro generation.
MacBook Pro M2
The new MacBooks feature three Thunderbolt 4 ports, an SDXC card slot, as well as charging via MagSafe 3. In addition, 8K displays at up to 60 Hz and 4K displays at up to 240 Hz can now be connected via the HDMI interface here as well.
For wireless connections, all new M2 devices support the current standards WLAN 6E5 and Bluetooth 5.3.
The new M2 devices are available to order today and are scheduled to begin shipping to customers on Tuesday, 24 January and will be available in Apple Retail Stores and at many Apple resellers.
Mac mini with M2 is priced from £699 including VAT and £579 including VAT for education.
Mac mini with M2 Pro will be priced from £1,549 including VAT and £1,429 including VAT for education.
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro is priced from €2,399 including VAT and €2,219 including VAT for education.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M2 Pro starts at 2,999 euros incl. VAT and 2,759 euros incl. VAT for education.
